1 Diff down!

Yup. Some may know that I just picked up my 06 STI last month. I love the car but I had a small issue with a "sound" coming from the rear end. I drove it for a couple weeks like this, and finally decided to have it looked at.

Thank god for the 5/60k warranty. I ended up needing a WHOLE NEW REAR DIFF!!! Total cost would have been over $2200.

How did this happen?

I'll find out when I go pick up the car.

that's kinda scary you just got it and the rear already went. Sounds like someone was enjoying the car a little too much before you got it.

There seems to be a story about it. The tech said they found redline fluid in it and it seemed to be the wrong weight compared to the subaru gear oil they use. They still changed it out and the car shows no other signs of abuse as far as I can find. Still has stock rubber on one set of rims. Luckily the seller found the paperwork and is sending it to me to transfer the gold 100k warranty to me.

rear end weight isn't really going to do that... If redline then it was prob 75 140 which should be well within specs of an 80-90 and others (dont know sti weights)... It broke because it was beat. A simple way to tell if the car was beat... look at the brakes if the calipers are disscolored THEY COOKED.

straight gear oil in an LSD would surely cause issues, regardless of weight
my assumption was friction mods added... most fluids have mods already in them (redline does).

lol my g35 is a sport vlsd but say dont use and lsd mods... I just changed it out for amsoil full syn 80 90 and it loved it... it doesn't open while spinning wheels anymore.
