2.0L or 2.5L?

I was talking to a friend today at work and was telling him what i might be doing to the WRX in a couple year cause its gonna cost some money, but i told him i was probably going to get a 2.5 block and get internals for it so that way i can get more powa! He said that if i should stick with the 2.0 cause i can get more power out of that block.

Which is true? If i put forged internals in the 2.0 and do some tuning, will that get more power if i put the 2.5 block on and tune that? Im confused! Any help would be much accepted!

 
2.5 offers more low and mid range torque. easiest route is to buy factory 2.5 shortblock for a couple k$ and xfer 2.0 bits onto that.

not that you can't put out seruous grunt with a 2 liter, it's just that the 2.5 is a case of "no replacement for displacement."

 
i mean if you really wanted to you could get a semi closed or closed deck block from japan. but that's a bit much. go 2.5, you'll be pleased.

 
haven't i been hearing about the 2010 2.5 blocks sucking a lot? Didn't ryans block just crap out?

 
id buy a used set of cases for a couple hundred and go from there. buying a brand new block to put forged internals in anyways is a waste of money.

The '10+ blocks are nice since they come with the nitrided cranks now. The STI rods are also good for up to 500 HP. Obviously the weak point is the pistons, as I would know... IMO:

JDM 2.0L = Good for power up top and high revs. Would make for a sick track setup car with it's top end capabilities. An overall stronger motor compared to the USDM 2.5L block due to it's forged internals

USDM 2.5L = Torque monster. Good for daily driver type car. Doesn't have high rev capabilities like the 2.0L. Weak point being the stock pistons obviously, but those can easily be swapped out for $450-500. At the price you can get a brand new STI 2.5 SB, it's really a good deal.

I don't agree Mikey. Like I mentioned before, if you buy a brand new STI 2.5 block from Subaru, you get a super nice crank, and rods plenty strong enough for a DD car. Buying the block and swapping out the pistons for forged and you'd be just under or right at $2000. That's not bad at all IMO. This is what I SHOULD have did the first time around

Still in contact with SOA warranty department to get this fixed. right now the deal is 50/50 for parts and labor to repair. Looking to do better.

 
Or you buy a good used 04 up 2.5 block with crank and rods for under 1k, buy pistons and call it a day. The older crank and rods are more then strong enough for 95% of the cars on this board. Hell, I read about a few dif individuals making over 500whp on n/a 2.5 blocks with just pistons and rods. If you power goals are high, then by all means over build the block, but for under 400whp, why spend the extra money

 
what too many owners don't realize about big power gains on turbo motors is that sure it's easy to dial up boost and make big numbers....but having that much power put you on a very slippery slope. more power, needs more brakes needs mor suspension needs more tires needs more $$$ every time you turn around. before long you end up like many -- having WAAAY more $$ into a car than 1) you can afford 2) can handle 3) would ever ever need outside a rally stage or drag strip.

...and if OP's concern aboaut the mods is that "it's gonna cost some money" then he dang well be ready to shell out cubic cash in case of parts failure. by this i mean, big power seeks out and destroys weak links in the chain. the only solution is applications of cash, lots of it.

certain members here can relate, yes-no??
