2.5 head gaskets

so i just picked up a 99 2.5 DOHC engine has 118k on it and i want to change the head gaskets and timing belt before i swap it in my car any suggestion what brands/types are best? or any other suggestions that i should do before i swap it in . any help would be much appreciated thanks guys.

 
only use oem gaskets and belts....you should buy a timing belt kit from evergreen and gaskets, i think thwe kit will come with the belt, tensioner and idlers although ive seen people reuse the tensioners, just compress it slowly....

 
the fel pro gaskets napa sells have the subaru wing logo stamped in them, same gaskets for less money. for the belt, id buy the mitsuboshi belt napa sells, ive used them with great results.

 
not really, they say there a one time use since the bolt stretchs once torqued and if re used they may not be at the correct torque....it might just be a ploy to get you to buy all new bolts or it could have some truth behind it...

 
ive done like 50 sets of HG's and never had a comeback, and always reused bolts. im pretty sure my buddys that work at subaru reuse them too

 
ok one more question there's two headgasket sets sold by fel pro the vin numbers for the kits are the same except for the last digit on is a 2 and one is a 3 whats the differance.... hs26167pt then a 2 or a 3 which one do i need?!?

 
^^What Mikey said. Re-use your bolts unless they are chewed up. I can't comment on the Napa gaskets, never used them. I've used the Napa belts, pretty decent product. Maybe throw some crank and cam seals in it while you're in there.

 
One tip I was given by a Subaru mechanic is to use some lube on the head bolts you are re-using. Some say engine oil,he said light bearing grease. This is supposed to help them torque truer than if dry. Lightly grease the threads and both sides of the washer. This prolly isn't a bad practice on any dry, re-used bolts that are getting torqued but aren'e getting never-siezed.

I know he's done this already.. but for the record.
