I have a 05 Impreza RS and the motor that's in my car know smokes and is knocking so im planning on pulling that this coming week and getting a used motor with less the 70k on it. I plan on doing a short ram intake, headers, and exhaust. I'm also thinking about doing cams and I'm looking for suggestions on what I should get and were I cam get them and not pay out the a$$ for them.

virtually every aftermarket cam available for the NA 2.5 motor trades off a bunch of low end torque for minor gains up top. depending on your intended end use, this is a bad tradeoff.

some few years ago, our race team built up a 2.5 RS full on rally car, turns out that a basically stock motor (pulled out of a Forester, BTW) worked f'in great. We added a programmable ECU, equal-length headers, Home Despot intake (PVC pipe w/cone filter) and that was about it motor-wise. Stock cams gave by far best response in low- and mid-range.

this car started life as a 94 1.8 liter L. It beat many many Evos and STIs, took top 10 overall placings in several national rallies and won numerous regional events. In fact, its current owners won the regional at New England Forest this very summer....in a car built way back in 2001!!

If you want cams, contact Delta Camshaft. They do various cam grinds, depending on how aggressive you want the profile. I did the Delta 1500 grind on my 2000 RS and they charged me $100 a camshaft. They may be up to $150 a cam now. Lucky for you, you only need 2 cams.

It was the biggest difference of any performance mod I had done to the car at that time. Before the cams, I had a LW pulley, Ganzflow intake, and full 2.5in. exhaust. Car definitely felt more alive. I can only imagine how a ECU reflash or piggyback would have done.

how much of a difference did you notice?

Pulled the motor last night now just have to pull her apart to see if I need the new motor or just heads. Still debating on doing cams. Have to do a little more research.

Still looking to do a set of cams. I have decided to go with delta cams but idk what grind I should go. Whats the best for a daily driver but good for a little power also. They offer the 1000, 1500 , 2000 grinds and don't know which one will work best. I'm also doing a header and prodrive axle back with a cold air intake.

1500... Best of both. 2000 is for top end power and causes a misfire at idle. 1500 is best because you get a little more low to mid power. I plan on doing the 1500 myself
