2008 Paint Issues

I have recently noticed quite a few "paint chips" on the body of the wrx. They are only on the metal painted surfaces. Nothing on plastic. I took it into the dealer today to have the service manager look at it and he told me they are going to contact Subaru to see what can be done. They are mostly on the hood but there are two right near the window edge of the drivers door and one on the C pillar drivers side. I did some research and this was a topic on the NASIOC forums but wanted to know if anyone here has the same issue. I was thinking about contacting Subaru myself but I thought about giving the dealer time to handle the issue. I just don't want to go through a salt/snow winter with bare metal showing. Most of the "chips" are perfectly round which leads me to believe it is an issue with the setting up of the under coat before the paint went on. I remember chevy's and dodge's from the 80's and 90's that had whole sheets of paint coming off the hood and roof because of poor paint applications.

I otherwise love my subaru and don't have any other issues so I would hate for this to be a problem. Let me know what you guys think.

I have paint chips all over my 05 rex wag, heh they're up over the door handles in back

paint on rocker panels is so hacked about all that's left is black plastic.

Maine roads + good dirty fun = pockmarked paint = "patina"

good f;n luck getting Subaru to do anything about that! chips show esp bad on black and WRB colors, too

few dabs of clear sealer will keep rust issues at bay. also, remember that Suby bodywork is all galvanized so what you see as 'bare metal' is probly nice shiny zinc coating that keeps Evil Road Salt at bay (for a while anyway

have close-up pixs of my paint condition, but pix files are too big and MS won't let em upload, wtf is up with that?

Good luck. Subaru doesn't want to touch paint issues. From my understanding, it comes down to the fact that are now using water-based paints. Good for the enviroment, bad for you and I. Also, (seems impossible but) they are using less paint. Less paint means weight saving, and better gass milage. 3 coats less paint means 20lbs dropped here, and more plastic here is 10lbs there. Do these little things here and there and it adds up.

I thought they've always had bad paint?
Always has been. Subaru paint is soft and thin.

Subaru has actually helped out a lot of people with paint problems on their 08s+. It's never a bad idea to go straight to the dealership and complain, so you've done good there. I know a lot of people were having problems in the same area as Nigel posted.

A good investment is a clear bra for those problem areas. I had one installed on the bumper of my 02 when it got repainted, and it worked amazingly. If I ever buy a brand new Subaru, this will be the first thing I do to it.

One word Subaru paint sucks. They will most likely say. "Maine winters and Sand. This was from the area rep. The only issues they are fixing is the doors from the design of the new body the front tires pound the rear doors. clear bra and a dab of clear is most likely your best bet. If your dealer is Evergreen you will get a much better response than other dealers.
