6mt swappage

Chris

YARRR SUBY MONSTER!!
So maybe I'm dreaming, or don't have the funds to do this right now, but whatever. This is me thinking through the forum for feedback.

I've done some reading, etc, so I know this is possible.

I think this would make my car more fun to drive, better gas mileage, run lower RPMs on the highway, have better acceleration, better diffs for more fun in the dirt and snow, etc, etc.

I was thinking if I did the swap, then I could sell my 5MT which has low miles and shifts absolutely perfect for a good price and make some of the swap money back.

What do you all think? Am I crazy? Do I have a good idea? ...?

I think it would be awesome, and leave the matching motor attached!!!

We had another thread about it: http://www.mainelysubarus.com/forums/showthread.php?9770-6-speed-swap
I personally think there are better things to spend the money on.... I'm sure everyone else will give their $0.02.

edit: eh, that thread pertains to a newer car, but yeah, my opinion is still the same.
I saw that thread. That thread was quickly derailed to something random anyway. And my car is 14 years older...

And Jason, having the matching motor would be awesome 8)

But I have to start somewhere. And if I were to start with the transmission, I'd have a transmission to sell. Rather than blowing it up with an STi engine ....

If you really want a 6 speed save your money and buy a used Spec B. The final gearing in a 6 speed and a 5 speed is pretty much equal, your crusing revs will be the same.

Sounds like a good start. Slowly gather parts, and until then, make sure you wash your car every once in a while so it doesn't rust away!!

You'd probably have to do the rear diff since if the trans has different ratios. I have zero idea of how a trans swap and the computery bits will interact, that's for someone who knows wtf they're doing to comment on.

Hell if you can find all the parts and get it done in your budget, I don't see why not; especially if you plan to put in a different motor down the road

When it's above freezing I take it to the car wash and get all the snow out from under the car, out of the wheel wells, out of the wheels, etc. I don't want it rusting away. It's in such good shape!

The thing is, the car is in great shape. No rust at all on the body. And it is low miles for the year, only 106k. The only electrics to deal with is the reverse lights, so I'd have to splice and solder the harness. No big issue, and the speedo. But apparently I can just screw the cable end in from my tranny and it will be fine.

Yeah no real electronic issues at all. It would be a pretty straight forward swap. And yeah, you'd want the rear diff too. Yeah the salt is killer, always wash the bottom and the wheel wells to get all the salt and sand out!!!

^^ yep! I wash them out nice and well. The only big rust issue is my rear passenger door. I guess water has been getting in through the window and rusted it out from the inside. The bottom of the door is pretty much gone. Rusted to nothing. So new door maybe, I dunno. But it's just a door so whatever.

About the diff, yes, I'd definitely get one. Even if it would work with my diff I'd want something that wasn't open.

And the future of what engine got attached would more likely be an H6 than a turbo.

read my post on the other forum Lobstah posted up. You don't want a 6spd in a NA car. Not unless you have a hell a lot of work done to your NA motor.

I'm not looking to do 0-60 in 6th gear, just want more options. Besides 6th gear isn't much higher than 5th in the 5speed boxes.

Like I stated earlier. Even with an stock STI 6th gear is a slouch. Man come to think of it even with my car it can be boggy also. So imagine that on a car with over 100 hp less than a stock sti.

There are a few other electrical things, I believe ... there were when I did my swap. There is a neutral position switch, reverse light, and ... do you have hydraulic clutch, or cable ... if you have a cable, you'll need to switch pedals, and then you'll probably have to mess with brakes too. Splicing would probably work though ...

You'll also need the driveline, all four axles, maybe hubs (I don't know if the axle ends are different), the rear diff (as stated), and I'm not sure how well interior bits will fall together.

Honestly? I don't think it's worth it without more power.

plus clutch fork

trans cross member,

shift linkage

clutch and pressure plate

you WILL need hubs (which means rims too) and possibly struts depending on your struts

drive shaft

Still want to do it? It's not just a matter of ''plug and play'' on something like that unfortunately. It's a nice idea, but not a good one.

the expense of parts needed for 6MT swappage ($6k minimum) into your Legacy sedan would far outweigh current value of the car, and there's no way you can get that $$ back come resale time. it would be way cheaper to sell current car, get upgrade with a "full factory designed set" of parts, aka an early Fozzy XT or a bugeye Rex wag...and then go from there.
