YARRR SUBY MONSTER!!
Now that my ABS turns on and off by it's self and become an AtrociousBrakingSystem I have disconnected it. Just wondering about the rest of you.

even in the Fozz, with ABS, when the situation calls for it, i try to brake without engaging ABS. i loved my Brighton with no ABS too

My first car, the 97 L didn't have ABS. I'm used to not having them and honestly prefer not having them. I feel like I can predict the car better.

I have it and like it for the commuting I do. when I was autoXing I hated it.

it is although a point of failure during inspection, just FYI.

Carefull. Its against the law to disable it if it comes factory.

I rather like it sometimes. I think it becomes more effective for some of the people who dont understand how the brakes work in the snow/slippery conditions. It helps with the group of people who just jam the brakes to the floor when starting to slide. It allows the tires to continue to roll instead of locking up. No mater how hard you push it will keep you from locking the tires up. I think that covers about 75% of all drivers on the road. So it is (not for all) a saftey feature that was a nice development.

I know you aren't supposed to disable it. But it is to the point where it randomly enables and disables. So I'll be braking, ABS doing it's thing, and suddenly the wheels lock. To me, that is WAY more dangerous than not having it at all. I can drive without it, but when I'm expecting it to work, it better work.

RallyJeep has no ABS. The Audi has a factory ABS switch...which doesn't work. The ABS is always off in that car as well. My old work truck, '08 Tacoma...I pulled the fuses in the winter.

My foot is more capable of stopping a car than the silly ABS computer is. My Tacoma used to roll on past stoplights until I disabled it.

The ABS really pisses me off when one wheel is on an icy patch, but the other 3 have pretty good traction. It doesn't let the other wheels brake as hard as they should. I can stop way faster if all 4 wheels have traction than just 3. And it isn't because on wheel doesn't have traction. it's more than that. It's ABS being stupid.

ABS is no panacea and no replacement for an educated braking foot.

in really low grip conditions (snow, ice, loose gravel) it actually increases stopping distances.

however for most people in panic braking, ABS allows them to mash the brakes and still steer -- a crucial safety factor overall for average (i.e., untrained) drivers

if you know not to lock up the binders and still try to steer, you would come out ahead...assuming you never ever forget this skill -- even when you're not really paying attention, like when driving to work before your morning coffee kicks in.

I leave ABS engaged for street driving, OFF for rallyX and backroads bombing.

you said it Nigel

wheres the poll option for: i have abs, its connected and know how to brake the car more effectively without it.

I think that falls under the first actually. it is a good safety net. I know it has kept me inline during an emergency manuver at ~65mph that turned into subaru icecapades.

when racing, you drive much differently and because of that have more control when sideways than if you are in 5th putzing down the TPK and find yourself sideways avoiding a drunk @ 65mph sipping your oontzy venti latte with cashmere gloves.

Yea, points taken. I'll look into fixing this. Hopefully it is something stupid. But currently my ABS dying in the middle of hard braking is more dangerous than not having it.

If the ABS cutting out is an issue, because you start to slide you have an issue in the driver department. That means you are braking too hard. Even though you have ABS, you shouldn't rely on it to keep you from sliding. You can threshold brake even with ABS on the car.

My old car had ABS issues where the wiring at the sensors would dry out an brake like it was brittle. Then it would touch and work, then I would turn and the ABS stopped working, then I turn again and its back. I would think WTF. Some wire strippers and black tape fixed that problem.

It is almost impossible not to have my ABS come on. It is way to sensitive.

don't forget I own a subaru as well.

it doesn't come on without reason. you also may want to check your tire pressures and make sure the tires themselves are a matched set. heavily worn, or mismatched tires will cause ABS strangeness. otherwise, learn from what your ABS is telling you. it only starts to pulse when it is sensing a tire cease to go round and round under braking.
