advice on clutch / flywheel

I have this combo in my 02 WRX. I regret it 100%. Yes, it does pick up a bit faster, which is always a plus, but the noise and chatter that it makes is not worth it IMO. If at any point I need to remove my transmission again, I am putting OEM components back in.

do you know who make the oem clutch

exedy does

ryan's clutch chatter is probably more due to the light flywheel than to the exedy stage 1 clutch, which is a well proven unit. they put beefy flywheels in stock drivetrains for a reason-- they are easier to be smooth with. the larger/heavier surface on the stock flywheel lasts longer too.

advice to OP -- go for the Exedy Stage 1 clutch, skip the lighter flywheel and go with an OEM unit for that.

all the reviews ive read on other bbs, people say that chatter goes away after the 15o mile breakin period? never did? could you tell me a bit more?

Never did for me. I only get the chatter on deceleration. Acceleration there is no chatter/noise at all. This happens due to gear backlash due to the lightened flywheel.

simple solution: always speed up, never ever slow down.

true true.

I have heard that some people have solved this problem to a certain extent by putting less pressure in the rear tires and more in the front. I've tried this with no luck

i'm confused at how the fly wheel can effect the backlash between the gears.... I was always under the impression that the backlash was the gap between the teeth of two mating gears? how does the flywheel effect this gap? and is this merely an annoyance? or potentially hazardous to my fragile bits?

no, but you can "bounce" the backlash while decelerating. basically you are hitting each side of the gears and "chugging".

Most of the time you end up doing that in parking lots (i am sure you are farmilair) but you end up doing it on deceleration due to the lack of weight in the flywheel.

I'm in the same boat as Ryan with my lightweight flywheel. I'm really disappointed with it as well. I ran this exact setup only the 6spd variant in my previous car and there was no noise whatsoever. I would never have put the lightweight flywheel in over stock for what little gains you get. The only pro I can honestly note is easier revmatching.

ok, that sounds like it cant be that good for the tranny. "bouncing" of gear teeth at higher speed, right?
most likely not. but from my speakings with service dudes... the aftermarket clutch/flywheel installs are usually the ones that munch a trans. not saying all, but it is common.

i have clutch chatter on takeoff with a stock flywheel. ive learned how to engage it differently to avoid it though..

Has anyone ever gotten MISFIRE codes from installing a lightweight flywheel? my CEL pops on every now and then like couple of months or so with a misfire code. and it will also have "spells" where I'll start it especially after fueling up that it will sit there and stumble until I blip the throttle.... those happen more like every couple of weeks or so....
