Alternator died

Chris

YARRR SUBY MONSTER!!
So my alternator is dead, had to drive 50 miles with no alt, the last 15 with headlights because it was starting to get really dark and rainy. I unplugged one headlight to save some power... Got home with 10.5v left in the battery. PHEW! Now I have a charger on it so I can drive around tomorrow. But what about the alt? Unfortunately it had to die right before a 3 day weekend

Should I get a brand new one?

Rebuild mine?

Get a used one?

Some advise and prices would be very appreciated. Thanks

Have it rebuilt. I have a guy that does it in Nobleboro. He's an older guy and does a great job, and a lot cheaper than new!!! I have his number if you want

'99 OBW alternator works in '96 legacy no prob! Took less than half an hour to swap around and my legacy is alive again

Weird thing is the light on the OBW didn't come on when I started it. (with no alt at all). Didn't try revving over 4k RPMs though because it was cold.

Probably because the battery was still full, so it was reading fine

So I'm pretty sure the problem with my old alternator is the regulator. Since I have had the car my headlights always dimmed at idle. Then when I installed my scangauge2 I was monitoring voltage. Rarely saw above 13.2v, usually 13, and voltage dropped to 12 or 11.9 at idle. Now with the other alternator I'm getting a steady 14 even at idle.

This leads me to believe the regulator has been dieing, and has finally died.

Taking it apart and replacing the reg can't be that hard, I've done full rewindings and rebuild on DC electric motors before.

Before I spend the next hour searching google, anyone know where I can buy a reg?

I thought that the voltage regulator was inside the alternator. I have the opposite problem, I started mine up the other day and the volts went off the scale and every light on the dash came on.

I'm thinking a new alt will solve the problem

The voltage regulator is inside the alternator, I dunno much about that crap, but I would think you'd be able to get one at an auto parts store, or try that guy I told you about

Yea, I'll try. I really don't want to pay someone to fix something I can easily do myself. Nothing in an alternator is very complicated. So I think I can tackle getting it working again.

your 'new' alternator has its own regulator, you have most likely solveded 2 plobrems with one used part.

if you are now getting 14v, quit worrying!

He only borrowed an alternator from another one of his cars, so he still has to fix the one he has

Ok, so I think it is the brushes. I'll pick some up tomorrow and see if it is better. I want to replace the bearings too, because the front one is quite noisy.
