I have been a part of this for about 7 years. The past 2 have been on the Committee that organizes it in South Portland, and again i am the Luminaria Chair Person this year.
For people that do not know the RFL is "a fun-filled overnight walking event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for American Cancer Society-funded research and programs. It represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day, cancer will be eliminated."
That is a quote from our local South Portland Relay Website. Which is http://www.southportlandrelay.org There is a ton of information there!
People who participate in the Relay form a team, raise money, sell and display Luminaria, camp out at the track for the night, and walk in relay style with at least one member of the team on the track at all times. It is lots of fun and very moving!
The Luminaria Ceremony is a time we Honor and Remember those that have lost the battle with cancer and the those that are still fighting. Bags are created with the names of those we are honoring writen or decoraded on the side, the bags are then filled with sand and a tealight. During the ceremony the lights are turned off, the tealights are lit and soft music is played followed by silence for the last 30 minutes. During this time all of the names are displayed on at large screen. This is what i organize. It is extemely emotional and displays the reason many of us relay.
I am wondering if there is anyone here that has ever participated in this before or is this year? There are a bunch of events throughout the state.
Also as a team member i am also raising money. If anyone would like to donate to this great cause please feel free to visit my online fund raising site.
