Any ideas?

Ok, this is what happened... Driving the car (01 RS, 195k) back from NH, exit the highway, driving on a local road at 35mph normaly (not hammering on it) the car seemed to almost stall, then proceded to make this noise. Sounded to me like a bent valve or some metallic noise. Drove the car home slowly, parked the car. Over the past three months I have started the car to move it a couple times, same noise present. Started it about a week ago, no noise, back to normal operation... I drove the car a little today, can't replicate the problem. I was suspicous of skipping the timing, and somone suggested I may have gotten some bad fuel and got a good slug of water. The car never misfired, just made the noise... Any ideas? Inski, shorty, other subaru professionals?

Thanks!

Old legacy made some noises like that one winter while it was not being driven a whole lot. Oil change and some Marvels Mystery Oil fixed it right up.

Sounds like rod knock or severe piston slap. Hard to tell from the video, can't get a sense of depth or direction. But while it was idling it didn't knock, only when you blipped the throttle makes me believe piston slap.

hmm. I think I'm gonna start with pulling the vakve cover and see if I can identify anything loose or broken. The noise sounded like it was comming fron the left head, rear cylinder (I think that's #4). The kicker is that it's running fine now, not making any noise.... I was thinking it might be a broken spring that managed to rotate itself back around to a spot where it is working the valve again?

Thanks!
