Any rattlecan masters here?

So...I fail at rattlecanning. Haha.

The texture keeps ending up very rough, and I can't seem to get it to not have lines where I painted.

The hell am I doing wrong?

sounds like bad surface prep. roughness comes from lack of sanding, dust/dirt on surface to be painted, or dust/dirt blowing around in shop or outside....or all 3 at once.

light sanding or steel wool prep usu suffices, then wipe with clean rag moistened with brake cleaner or paint prep solvent. let dry before painting.

hold can 10-12" away from surface, swipe back and forth. use moderate overlap, keep can moving at all times while spraying. the lines you mention sound like you're not leaving enough overlap, and end up with "lines" of heavy buildup. several lights coats cover better than trying to lay paint on thick at once.

exactly whut r u painting?

This thing. You remember this thing. I like to paint random body panels every now and then when I get bored enough.

Ty I did my first rallycross car in 4 cans of wal-mart special flat black. I will be down your way at the end of the week. I'll bring my crowbar incase there are any headcrabs lurking in your Audi

Sanding is the key, I did mine with a power sander in in low grit numbers and it came out great

if what you're getting is 'orange peel' than its from not enough paint being laid down while still wet. the surface (when dry) will literally look like an orange peel, dimpled all over. if that's your problem you need to go slower and lay down the paint thicker so that it spreads out evenly as a liquid/gel, but not so thick that it runs. the orange peel is essentially close together droplets, whereas it should be a solid even sheet.

and black sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I did the entire neon with many rattlecans and its' very hard to get the right amount of paint at the right angle.

yes. you may want to try flat red or flat something else. it is a bit harder to find. but the stripes will be less evident.

stripes may be an artifact of overlaps made worse by crappy spray nozzle on rattlecan

try Krylon brand, the spray nozzles are adjustable for angle and give a nice broad pattern with smooth coverage

Napa custom OEM color in a can. $21 Did in 3 coats. Martin senior brand Paint. Wire brushed and wiped clean with a cloth . All the advice above applies
