anyone own a 3.0R outback?

HR radness

His royal radness
As much as I want to buy the wife and kids a tribeca i cant swing it right now. The LL bean outbacks are really nice and I am looking at a few '05's

There are three candidates, all over 100K

The third I cant find the ad for, but its black with 140K for $7999

They are all under book, so all of them are good deals

does anyone have experience with the flat six? I hear they are nearly bulletproof but I need some firsthand info. I am tempted to buy the one that has 180K since its so cheap but I dont want to get screwed a year from now. I've seen ll bean outback with really high miles on them.

Any thoughts?

The only big problem they have is the tensioner in the serpentine belt likes to raisin itself. If it's not replaced before this happens, it destroys the bracket. Fortunately, it's easy to replace the serp. belt tensioner and not worry about it.

Also, the H6 has an issue with the o-ring in the fuel pump assembly. I think it's the one on the output of the fuel pump into the line that then exits the tank. The o-ring likes to squish out, and it just pumps the fuel back into the tank and no pressure at the engine. Those are really the only 2 big issues those things have, for the most part, they're unstoppable.

That one for $5500 looks REALLY nice.

My 2001 VDC Outback that I bought new now has 223K+ miles . I have always changed the oil at 3 to 4k. Dealer serviced up to 100K while under the extended warranty. I had no problems with car at all. After that, normal service oil changes at local shop in Sanford. I always used the best conventional oil. I had the starter replaced at 165k and had Midas put in a new muffler and midpipe with reasonator. At 185K my valve covers were leaking and I took it to Patriot. I had Patriot do a #4 service including plug change since there would be no labor cost to get at the plugs since they were doing the valve cover change. #4 service included radiator flush, change tranny fluid, change all differential fluids, etc. I figured it was a good time to have major service since the last time was at 90K.

At 210K had a front strut break and replaced both fronts. The engine still runs strong, I average 24-25mpg and have always used premium. I have access to 93 in Sanford. Car is still runing on original water pump, fuel pump and it has a timing chain not belt ! All the original wheel bearings are still the car. The only complaint I have with my 2001 VDC is that it eats brakes. I average only 20K between pad changes and 40K with rotors. There was no difference between dealer parts or after market except price. I believe this problem was because the 2001 VDC Outback was Subarus 1st car with stabilty control and the computer was too touchy. I do not think later years had similar problems. Most of these miles were put on when I was a Realtor. My Outback has been down many discontinued town roads and have knocked off the heat shield quite a few times but it has never let me down. Running dedicated winter tires this car is a tank and I have never been stopped even going thru 2 ft high snow down my 700 ft. driveway and then plowing thru the snow bank left by the town plows.

.

If I was to buy a used Outback it would definitely buy another 3.0 6 cyl. When buying any car with 100K plus miles try to find one that has service records, this sould afford a little piece of mind. Good luck on your search.

The one for $5500 IS really nice! Just looked at it tonight and after I get it up on a lift to make sure its not dripping oil from somewhere I'm going to drive it home. I'll change the tensioners and the belt as soon as I get home.

Thanks for the info INSKI

Bought the one with 180K. The ride is pretty floaty (esp conmpared with the LGT wagon) so I'm going to upgrade struts and springs in the near future. Pics to come
