Battery charging/starting issue

Ok so heres the story. A few months back I had an accident with my car which caused me to leave it sitting in my driveway for a while, as I pieced the parts to repair it together. Once I got all the body panels fitted I decided it was time to start it up and give it a go...well bad news it didn't start..no clicking no nothing..

So I jumped it with my girlfriends car got it running and drove it around the block. Then left it running in my driveway hoping to charge it a little bit. No luck..

So I put a brand new Interstate MT-35 in it and boom it started and ran fine.

So I thought my problems were solved...but then something new started happening....after a month or so when I was driving it I could hear engine noise on my radio...and then all of a sudden one morning it started hard and that night it didn't start at all...so I jumped it to get to work and then had to have a jump to get home..

I have left the car sitting for a little while again trying to figure out what to do...and am hoping there will be some good advice here.

I am thinking there are a few possibilities of what could be happening, but would like some input.

#1 candidate: fried alternator, perhaps made worse by voltage spikes from jump starts

#2 candidate, fried alternator, further damaged by jump starts and original accident

So you would suggest testing the alternator first and going from there Nigel?

Would jumpstarting it and then disconnecting the battery to see if the car keeps running be the easiest/fastest way to test? Or should I jump it and take it to Advanced (or some other parts store) and see if they can test it?

yes, get alt tested and based on results go from there.

if alt is good, you have a wiring issue, probly a short or ground from accident damage

if you can avoid further jumpstarts, that would be a good start (bad pun, so solly)

pull alt and get to store & testing

I checked the grounds in the engine bay and none look loose/frayed...the negative ground that runs to the block near the starter is a little discolored on part of the exposed wire near the bolt...

That could be a sign of bad wiring. Anyway, I saw an ad while I was at VIP and on their website and it says they'll test your alt and starter for free. I bet if you just drive your car there (or have it towed if you don't want to jump it again) they can just do it with everything in the car, but I don't know how the car's electrical system really works.

There's no real info on the ad, so I assume there's no hidden charges, but you may want to call just in case.
