blacked out headlights

Okay so I want to black out my headlights and taillights on my 05 LGT...any suggestions on how to go about this project and/or any parts to buy/not to buy?

tails are one thing. if you want to tackle it yourself from what i've been hearing from people (fyi i'll be doing this tomorrow so i've been paying close attn lately) it's just a layer of matte black spray paint, clearcoat, wetsanding, then buffing.

headlights i'd either avoid doing or have someone do it professionally. the guys at M&A i believe can recommend someone for you

Headlights involve baking them in the oven to soften the glue, pulling them apart, prepping and painting the housing, and then baking them once more to put them back together. It sounds easier than it really is. I did this to my first set of USDM Bugeye lights, and didn't put much time or effort into them and they came out hazy and leaked real bad. If you get any of that glue/sealant on the lens of the headlamp, it will be forever hazy and you will hate it. Trust me, I've been through this and had to buy new headlamps. It's a project that requires a lot of patience, bravery, and definitely some skill. If you can find someone to do it professionally, that's your best bet.

If you want help then I can help you. I've opened mine up plenty of times. Send me a pm if you need help since I'm in the area.

same here, ive had great results baking and opening up headlights and blacking then out..

Thanks for the insight, from the little bit of research I have done....a lot of ppl complain about opening up the headlights and having leakage problems. I deff. want to do the taillights and see how they come out then decide on the headlights

If you get some headlight sealer and just remove most of the old stuff you wont have to worry about it... I have one light tho that just wont stop leaking no matter what I do...

christ i'm retarded. i thought you meant tint/smoking.

for blacking out follow the oven instructions. i've done several sets of headlights. tails generally don't work the same, you need to dremel them out and replace the lenses. thus the smoking for them

also pats right, you should never have leaking issues. i dont even remove all the old silicone, i just put a new bead down on top of it and call it a day.

unless you have a cracked ballast and it wont seal no matter what!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hate my headlights!

Window weld works well!

I put them back in the oven after I black them out and the old sealant seals back up. Never had one leak on me.

Well I figured that tint/smoking would be the way to go with the tails, so no your not retarded! I still want to find out how yours come out!

Dont use matte bud, you want flat. ive had the best luck with the 98 cent can at wally world, for some reason the spray flow is really good for this, you get more control of the darkness of it.

I think there's a pretty good guide for this on Legacygt.com. Check it out.

You might also consider laminex for the tails. Easier to go back to stock.

aight will do nickle. i wish i could make it up there but its soooooo far from portland

If i had gas in the pig id come down, i dont have to work today =P

i had them tinted in my rs when i had one, right after i got it painted.

Oh, and i saw jeffs wrb wrx wagon again today. is he cool? or kinda kept to him self?

ive been seeing a lot of cars with blacked out lights and i really like it! im having a hard time finding a process anywhere on baking, how long do you bake and what temps?
