Blown Turbo's

I made a bad buy and bought an 05 Legacy GT, the person had replaced the turbo in it, then I blew that turbo the day I got it due to him installing the turbo wrong. Another new turbo was put in and while I was down in Mass that turbo blew. I keep hearing that I need to rebuild the motor and clean it out or I'll keep blowing turbos... Is this true? Or can I run it fine with some quick oil changes to get some metal shavings out? Some input would be nice, I don't have the money to rebuild after having to pay for this lemon.

If you keep blowing turbos and have metal shavings in the oil it's probably inevitable youll need a motor very soon. you've got to wonder where the metal is coming from. You can ask Dan all about those cars!!!

Seeing the shape of these turbos as they are replaced, it's easy to assume where the metal is coming from. If I can get most out by oil changes though, I'll change the oil right off the bat, run for a day then change again, if that is still shiny, then I'll run another day or two and change again. I'll keep doing that until it's clean if it will hold out for a while.

If you take it to a shop that does changes they can flush which should pull most of it out. What color is the metal coming out?

Sparkly? hahaha I dunno, colors and I don't mix well. When I drain the oil, it is full of metal, and it's still very very new oil. So it may last a while if I just change the oil?

If it's bronze in color that's main/rod bearings. If it's got that much metal coming out of it it's a ticking time bomb. It's only a matter if time before it blows. Get a new motor. Flushing metal shavings out won't help.

half-ars'ed measures bring half-ars'ed results. the damage is probably already done by shavings from earlier blown snails.

so ok maybe you can get most metal debris out by oil change (more accurately, changeS) but there's already stuff in the oil pump, up in head oil passages, crank/rod/cam bearings etc etc. only long-term fix is a rebuild, and a thorough one at that. all it takes is a few errant shavings and poom! your nice new 'rebuilt' motor gone buh-bye as well.

look at the oil drain plug, it's magnetic to catch metal debris...what color are the shavings on that?

I'm not sure on color, I only see primary colors, besides brown, black, and white. It looked yellow, but that could be from the oil? It was shiny in the oil catch pan I used in the oil change, and shiny on the plug. That's all I can tell

It can either sit and wait for me to come up with the money for the rebuild or it can strand me away from home? Looks like I'm parking the POS.

Fair warning on buying anything from a certain member on here! Don't expect a return call or message or anything once the paperwork is signed and the car is outta his yard!

I was worried about that one when he had it for sale. He replaced the turbo in it, but it's common for other things to be wrong after that

Was the feed line bolt with the screen changed? If plugged no oil to turbo.

He had removed the screen. But he pinched the return oil line and left it and sold it like that, blew that turbo less than 100 miles of driving it. He knew he had messed it up but didn't fix it. According to Evergreen the motor should be rebuilt or replaced when you blow a turbo, he didn't do either before popping the new turbo in. I bought the car not knowing he had only done a half-arsed job on fixing it. Anyone selling a short block cheap?!

unfortunately the LGTs are wicked sensitive to snail malfunctions. the important thing is HOW it malfunctions. if it just starts blowing by oil that's one thing... if the bearings go due to starvation, it's motor and turbo time!

IMO the oil filter screen is on the wrong side of the turbo!

best of luck!
