[BREAKING] Subaru withdraws from WRC!!!!

Subaru may pull its support from the World Rally Championship for 2009, joining Suzuki as yet another Japanese automaker planing to leave the series.

A report posted on the Finnish MTV3 network's website claims Subaru will no longer compete in the World Rally Championship in 2009. This is big news as Subaru developed much of its following and fan base by successful competing in the series with its iconic blue-and-yellow Imprezas.

If this report is correct, it would build on news earlier today of Suzuki pulling out of the WRC. Unlike Subaru, Suzuki was new to the series and therefore moving away from the series isn't as big of a deal.

Though companies like to have racing teams to show off their engineering prowess, in a bad economy it is sometimes the easiest thing to cut. This may explain why these reports are coming out so regularly. Of course, the WRC is introducing Spec-based rules for the future, but it may be too late for these two teams.

PRESS RELEASE

16 December 2008

Subaru to withdraw from World Rally Championship

Subaru has announced its decision to withdraw from the 2009 World Rally Championship.

This sudden decision was in response to the widespread economic downturn that is affecting the entire automotive industry, and follows Suzuki

Awesome. Stupid economy.
It has nothing to do with the economy... it because Subaru doesn't have an S2000 Platform.. remember, Japanese cars aren't in the budget crunch like the American Cars are.

BTW, Rob, "Likey"?

Happening in all motorsports--Honda recently pulled out of F1....

Edit: This makes me sick to my stomach though... This is the reason I own a subaru...along with Colin who made them famous to me. First we lose Colin and now this, jesus :crybaby2:

Sad news yes, but no real surprise. NASCAR downsizing/layoffs are rampant, Audi out of ALMS, etc etc

privateer team with Mads Ostberg set to run 08 spec WRC Imprezers in 10 events next season, and they've confirmed they are still IN.

needless FIA monkey-business mandating S2000 spec cars for 2010 ain't helping....Subaru gots nothing on the radar to work for that format. heh, if FIA caves and goes back to current WRC spec I bet subaru would be back in a heartbeat.

and no, the rumored suby/toyota rwd sportster is NOT gonna work. besides, that car isn't anything more than a concept at the moment. a computer rendering and some PR flackage does not a rally car make.

well if they built a n/a 2.0 and droppedit in the R1 format...they could have something there.. but not likely.

that's too bad. hopefully they'll jump back in when the circumstances are better. although the japanese companies aren't feeling the economic crash as much, everyones involved. shortly after the crash i saw a bar chart of the major companies and all the US ones were down 50% in sales, the JDM ones down about 30%. i imagine that's only in the us, but by now the recession has spread worldwide and all areas are slow.

whats the lowdown on the s200o thing?

I haven't seen any reports for Subaru but I did see an article stating that Honda, Toyota & Nissan were all way down on US auto sales. Gotta make cuts somewhere. I'm sure they'll be back as soon as the US Government decides to bail out foreign auto makers too.

Privateer team of Norwegian driver Mads Ostberg has offered Petter a seat in Impreza WRC for 09, pending untanglements of contractual issues.

Atko season still unknown

that is all for now

so...updates on where the boys from the SWRT are now.

Atko is driving for the Citroen JR team

Petter is driving a 2006 Citroen Xsara. his team and sponsors will be announced before his first event of the season, Rally Norway.
