OK. So my '03 WRX Wagon is throwing me for a loop. When im driving down the road, my heat blows PLENTY hot, not overly hot, but just right. As soon as I stop at a light, stop sign, or parking space, and the RPM's drop below 1700, and i mean AS SOON AS, the heat goes ice cold, as soon as I start moving again, back to normal. I Just had a coolant flush at the dealer when they replaced the timing belt, and they said the water pump was fine. Coolant level hot is half-way between max and min for hot. So is this just a idiosyncrasy with bugeyes? or something that is gonna cost me a bunch more money? I should add, that the fiancee says its been this way since I bought it, but being the warm blooded individual I am, I just noticed today. Thanks in advance for any insight..

Sounds like possibly a thermostat......

listen to nate. a thermostat is easy to change and cheep. If this isn't it, then it won't hurt anything anyway. just remember to get more antifreeze. My 02 wrx blows REALLY hot once it warms up. if I don't turn it down to about 60/40 then it will be too hot. When I stop, I have never noticed it not blowing hot anymore. I don't think it's quite enough to burn you like when driving but it's still hot. So basically what I'm saying is that it sounds like an isolated instance to me. Unless mine is an isolated instance of an insanely, awesome heater.

it shouldn't be the thermostat cause it would be doing the opposite of what he is saying hot when sitting and cold while driving

it could be anything from a flap stay opened or closed to one of your selectors staying in the wrong postion to the fan blade slipping on the heater motor

the only way to tell is to look and listen to each one and eliminate each possible problem

^^^ I don't know. I'm sure you know 100% more then I do. But could be doing that with a thermostat. Wouldn't it depend if its stuck open or stuck shut?

My father had a old ford truck that ate up a couple thermostats in its life. And it presented the same the same way. When the truck came to a stop (stop sign, or light) it blew ICE cold air. Once rolling again, it blew warm air.

Gabe is correct, and if the T stat was stuck closed the car would overheat. reach under the IC with the car warmed up and feel the coolant hoses going to the heater core and see if one is hotter then the other and get back to me. Its possible that the water pump is not circulating at lower rpm, and therefore you lose your heat.

is the antifreeze topped off? if there is any air in the cooling system it will do that. take off the antifreeze filler cover, start your car, and let it run til its up to temperature, while its running be sure to turn the heat on all the way. then top off the antifreeze and you should be good.

I have never had any issues with my Impreza, but I have had thermostat, waterpump, radiator and heatercore issues in my previous vehicles. My jeep actually ended up having all 4 problems!!! This one sounds like a clogged heater core problem to me.

air in the system, problem solved.....Thank you much....

Mike, i meant to ask you about oil consumption, I noticed that she is drinking, not leaking, about a quart every 1000 miles or so. Should I be worried about this?

Drive much?

My car eats a quart per 2500 miles.

I think if you ask Subaru, they will say a quart per 1000 miles isn't too much.

Just make sure you check it regular, and keep it full.

Probably makes a little more smoke though huh? And yes spin, I do drive much, lol. Just for work I can count on driving at least 53 miles per day. Then on weekends I drive about 30 miles in the opposite direction from work to visit friends. So yeah, Im figuring on 20k to 25k per year.
