Calling resident cell phone experts ('specially you AT&T ones)

I have a company BlackBerry now, which makes my personal BlackBerry, well, useless.

The question is this: can my (formerly Verizon) BlackBerry 8830 be made to work on AT&T's network? I'd like to give this to a buddy, but it won't be of any use to him unless he can make it jive w/AT&T.

Thanks

Hmmm....that's a toughie. The 8830 is a World phone, meaning it's supposed to operate on both technologies. I do know that all 8830's have a SIM slot regardless of carrier. I have a Verizon 8830 (CDMA) with a Virgin (I think) Wireless SIM card (GSM) for use overseas. I'd say the only way to know is to try it.

No SIM slot on this one, just the MicroSD card slot...unless there's some secret panel on my phone that I don't know about.

WAIT!

I just cracked the battery cover of the AT&T one for the first time, and I found the sneaky SIM slot DOES exist on my Verizon crackberry.

Now - to test out said buddy's SIM card in my phone and see what happens.

Thanks!

The phones are normally locked to the specific carrier unless you purchased a phone say on ebay that was already unlocked. There are many sites online that for a charge will provide you a unlock code which will allow you to use the phone on different carriers.

Once you have the phone unlocked it is as simple as changing the simm.

Have fun!!!

If it is a world phone (like Sprint's blackberry, which takes a SIM card) it won't work on GSM frequencies here in the US. Typically, they operate on 900/1800 mhz and we run 850/1900 here. IN the US they use CDMA, which isn't compatible with our GSM network. So, the answer is no..it won't work. There are several AT&T employees on here that I'm sure would be glad to hook you up with a Blackberry though

Nah, this was simply an attempt to help my friend out (who really could use a BlackBerry, but can't swing it right now.)

My last one went to someone up at Evargreen...no idea if that's still functioning or not
