Checked your sub frame lately?

Mine is absolute crap. Rusted all to hell with big gaping holes. Failed inspection miserably this morning because of it. Everything else underneath looks fine except for the sub frame. Looks like I'll be replacing it

I knew sooner or later it was gonna bite me in the ass come inspection time.

what year sube? I have been quite motivated with a mig and a soon to be 23 year old sube. I would not expect it after the mid 90s onward, they aren't the same materials today. The old and new have benefits of each of thier types..

this is why i wash the underside of my car weekly all year round and SOAK WITH WD40... I also sprayed rust treatment on all non alu parts under the car and then undercoat it as needed... 2-3 times a year.

No rust yet... YET!

I just replaced mine (also giant gaping holes) and did some research about it. It does help with structural rigidity and some crash protection, but I believe the JDM cars don't even have one. Nothing is actually attached to it, it's just bolted to the underside of the car. I got mine from a NABISCO member from Florida for $30, shipping was $100:p

If you dont care too much about it I would just unbolt it, get the car inspected and then look for one with no rust from a junkyard or try and find one on the NESIC forums from a parted out car

^I just finished removing mine 2 mins ago. What a hunk of CRAP that thing is! If I don't need one I'm just gonna leave it as is.

in practical terms that subframe's real benefit s to help protect lower rad support and rad tank when you bottom out in loose gravel or smack a hard snowbank.

don't axe how this was learnt

it also makes a good stout mount for leading edge of a skidplate

Here's a whole thread on NASIOC about it http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=489314

If memory serves for daily driving you shouldn't notice the loss in rigidity, so long as you aren't in an accident, but you may notice the loss during more abusive driving. I think it may also add some support to the front sway bar mounts, so if you are running a big bar you may want to look at that. I personally have opted to leave mine in place.

i just welded a support to my engine crossmember (where the sway bar mounts to it) because it was rusted most of the way through. the subframe is just as bad. i'm not quite sure why they used such cheap metal on that piece when the chassis right next to it is in mint condition.

anyone looked into the aftermarket beefed up ones? how much are they shipped?

$600 shipped for most it looks like.

hollow section of that subframe is a perfect moisture trap, except for the 14 bolt holes that let water out...waitta minnit, them holes let the water IN

not to mention subframe's super crapola paint finish. if that subframe was galvanized like the bodywork, not of this silliness would happen

c'mon Subaru, get with it.

If the dreaded rust hits, my plan is to tig-weld a section of my GF's kid's Radio Flyer to the weaker sections.

If this fails, I know a guy, who knows a guy, who will weld a 14" I-beam from end to end, using only wordworking clamps, gorilla glue and a nylon stocking.

Failing that, there's always AWD demolition derby
