Clutch Suggestions

So, I have a 2001 2.5RS. I bought it a year ago, and have been babying the clutch, but its really time. I am going to STPR this year to volunteer, and I'm afraid that she just wont last. So, I am looking into an ACT 6 pad racing disk set up. Any thoughts?

hey i don't know where you are, but i have a stage II in my RS your welcome to try. i personaly don't like it. the pessure is too much in daily driving. and i've noticed that if you don't shift just right when your taking off or doing something like that that the clutch is REALLY easy to smoke. if i had to change it id go with a exedy stage I

From what ive read on rs25.com exedy isn't the best if you are going to turbo. most people use act street clutch with swaps, that's the recommended clutch from all the swap shops

ACT 6 puck is over kill. That is what I have in my car. I would go with the ACT street clutch. The 6 puck sucks for daily driving.

I'm not sure what exactly is in subiersgrrl's RS but it's not stock. It is a firmer clutch then my cable one in the obs. But it is much easier then akina's monster.

It's probably has some kinda of street/stage 1 clutch kit in it (i'm assuming street and stage 1 are similar). It engages very strongly, never feels like it could slip. It's very fast to shift once you get the hang of it, and not all that hard to learn.

We should let you try it sometime since we see you all the time. 8)

So, I'm getting the feeling that a race disk isn't the way to go, seeing as i drive the car daily. So I think I may go for the ACT Street Disk. Now I have a couple questions.

It was suggested that i replace the part that the throwout bearing rides on because it becomes grooved and the bearing gets a bit loose. I see on subaruwrxparts.com that they is a '5MT Transmission Snout Repair Kit' Would this work with the ACT clutch? It seems that this is a sleeve which would increase the diameter of the 'snout', which would mean that the bearing that comes with the clutch would not work, but would the bearing in the repair kit work with the ACT? I will call the suppliers and try to get these answered, but if anyone has any insight it is appreciated.

I am also looking to replace the flywheel with a lightened one. ACT Pro Lite is what I'm thinking. Any thoughts

Also any other thoughts of what I should replace while doing all this? Are there any special tools i will need? Do i need to replace the tranny fluid as well as the clutch fluid?

Any help is appreciated. I am rather new to all this and don't really know what I'm doing, but I do want to do it right. THANKS!!

What car do you have? If you've got a 2.2l, do all of your gaskets while the engine is out. The only "special" tool you will need is the Clutch Alignment tool, which comes with all new clutches. Yes, replace your fluids while it's out.

light weight flywheel does make a difrence, it makes it alittle harder to drive but you just have to be faster and more precice with your shifts. you shouldn't need anything special to do it. it's just a PITA i've been looking inot putting mine back to stock since i bought it. and it just is too much work to fix something that's not broke.

" What car do you have? "

I have a 2001 2.5RS sedan. Thanks for the info!!

We are pretty sure that my wife's car has a light weight flywheel, only because it seams to rev faster then other RSs i've been in. Can't say def though. But with the "street clutch" (again not exactly sure what's in it, but it's not stock), and the "light weight wheel" it is a blast to drive. Takes a little practice, but once you get it shifts are really fast, launches are solid, the power band seams to be raised just a little, and it seams faster then most RSs i've been in too.

I've heard that the light wheel makes a big difference as far as power, but you loose some low end. Whatever it does, some people like it and some don't. I don't complain!

Seriously though i don't think she would have a problem if you wanted to try it out and see if you like the feel of it. maybe at the GC drive or something.

gorham isn't that far out of the way i work in sopo. i could swing by after work.

tell you what, every clutch drop in my car is $100 off that borla

hahaha

Thanks, I would love to try out your car, but I am on a bit of a tight schedule. I am planning to take the car to Pennsylvania on May 31st. I am really worred that the clutch isn't going to make it there and back again, so I am tryingto get parts as we speak. Thank you for the info and offer!!
No problem.

Good luck.

I don't think you will disappointed with a street/stage I clutch kit with a lightweight fly wheel.

Thanks. I ordered a clutch today through Forperformance.com, AKA N.E.A.D., in westbrook. They guy there, Ryan I think his name was, was really helpful and worked all afternoon to get me a clutch. After talking with him about what i want to do with the car and whatnot, he is hooking me up with a Carbonetics 6 pad sprung hub clutch, and either an Exedy or ACT flywheel, with a nice package price. I'm really impressed so far, and hope that all the parts work out well for me. Now just to get it in the car...

wow i think i just got knocked down from my " craziest clutch in a GC" podium.

start doing leg exercises now. trust me, in traffic your gonna need them!

depending on when you plan on doing it. i'd be willing to lend a hand. i've never done a clutch in a subaru. but i've been known to turn a wrench on one from time to time

So in reviewing my chicken scratch notes and doing a bit more research, I'm not convinced its a carbonetics clutch, due to the variation in price. My note might say 'carbonic' which i don't seem to find as a brand name, but did come across this site :

Hopefully, I wont be disappointed...

Wow from that site and the characteristics chart your getting a clutch for a "MAJOR MOTOR, LOTS OF NOS, OR BOOST!!!" made for "BEST ROAD RACE"

What are your plans for the car?!?

I'll be interested to know how it works out.

I may even be there too...but you'll find I typically sit on something, drink beer, and make jokes while he works...even while working on my cars, haha.

I will definitely let you know what happens. Planning to get it together on the sat of memorial day weekend, the 26th i think. That afternoon. Mr Inski will be supervising, and probably Ty will be emptying the cooler... Anyone who wants to come check it out is welcome. Let me know and I'll post directions.

"MAJOR MOTOR, LOTS OF BOOST!!!"

My dreams for the car fit that description, but reality is different...

Until I win the POWERBALL ;D
