Damn pokey rodents

So we let our 6 year old boston terrier Dean out last night around 9pm for his last piss before bed. He showed up at the back door looking very unimpressed with a face full of quills. He didn't have any in his mouth or directly in his eyes which was good. I got about 4 out before he really started to loose it. Since he wouldn't cooperate we took him to the emergency vet clinic in Auburn so they could knock him out. From my house in Pittston to Strawberry ave in Auburn less than 30 minutes. Love the suby. He was in and out with no damage other than being wobbly after sedation. Anyway, I will make short work of that porcupine when I see him and here are the pics. Enjoy, I didn't.

nice to see someone who treats thier pet like a family member...

Glad UR pooch is ok and man does he look whacked in the second picture...

AWWW! Poor poochie. Mine did the same, one time, on Memorial Day weekend. She looked just like that second pic.

Quick acting, but short sedation??

Very quick he was up and moving around about 10 minutes after. Not completely out but pretty close, as you can see by the pic.

Glad Dean is ok Carl. It just isn`t pets you have to watch out for, kids get into encounters also. When we we lived upstate N.Y. one of our daughters decided to see what was making all that noise underneath the porch. She had a Peppy Le Pew encounter had to take a bath in tomatoe juice

mainely subarus shooting day at your place?
Just what the doctor ordered. I don't even have a rifle at teh house, how lame is that? Heidi has been bugging me to get one forever. This christmas I will make it happen. I just scouted the back yard with a light and shovel in hand, no porcupine, just mosquitos. I will catch up with him soon enough, its personal so the shovel suits me just fine.

Get a Ruger 10/22

pretty cheap and the .22 round will put the guy down without too much fuss.

now, now that pp was probably minding his own business when his business ended up with the dogs nose in it. didn't look like he got hit too bad, glad he's ok.

no, not a tree hugger. I regularly get the job of pulling quills from sedated dogs noses.

the story from the owner is often that the dog went after the pp.

best defense is a leash or a fence.

Leash my dog so he can't run on my five acres. Nope. One dead porcupine = happy neighborhood full of dogs. He is just a big spikey rat. Dean definately went after it as most dogs would. We are happy it wasn't that bad. Lucky this time.

ok, so the pp is dead meat, but keep in mind, lucky is right, they can lose an eye from a quill or get quills lodged in the chest and die. i would rather put my dog on a leash, than have him be a silly dog, and have bad things happen. you should see what a coyote can do to a dog or a bear if cornered.

sorry, I don't like seeing injured pets especially when it can be avoided (ie, leashes, etc). I see it all too often in my line of work and its NOT fun. just offering some advise to keep the little guy safe.
