Disappointment with 100w lamps

Chris

YARRR SUBY MONSTER!!
So I ordered a bunch of 100w lamps for my hellas.

Part number: hl88961s from this site

http://www.rallylights.com/SearchResult.aspx?CategoryID=600

The xenen blue ones. They're rated at a higher life and slightly more output. So I figured that was the better option.

They came in today, so I put one in a hella 500. And had a hella 500 with stock lamp to compare the difference.

Plugged them both into my power supply to some serious disappointment.

The blue one had less output. WTF. So looking at the amp gauge on my power supply the "100w" lamp used less than an amp more than the 55w one. I have yet to bring my fluke meter out to get exact readings, but this puts the "100w" lamps somewhere around 65w with less output.

Tomorrow, armed with some more research on power consumption and output, I'm going to give them a call. Hopefully get a refund.

OR I could just sell them on NES

Were they $10 a pair or each? Hopefully they give you your money back. It's too back the site doesn't give much info on the bulbs. Kinda misleading.

what is your power supply?

what wire gauge did you use to supply it?

and I believe I posted that it isn't worth the extra in the other thread.

I have a 20A fully adjustable lab power supply. I put the leads directly to the lamp just to make sure the wires to the hella weren't the culprit.

100w at 12v should be 8.3A, and that's not what they draw. So they're not actually 100w.

BUT... I did play with them some in the dark just a few minutes ago. The output is actually about the same, and I REALLY like the higher colour temperature lamp. So maybe I'll stick with em.

the long life bulbs are typically lower than the box wattage. They calculate the wattage with a higher voltage to get the 100w.

H3 isn't a good platform anyway. there isn't a lot of real estate on those things. H1's are far better but you would have to get different lamps.

Well, yes it does use more at a higher voltage. But I was going off exactly 12v which is what the bulb is rates as. Anyway, up to 14.4v it didn't use 100w. So it's a moot point anyway.
