dual range swap

Chris

YARRR SUBY MONSTER!!
For curiosity sake, how much work would it be to swap a dual range transmission into my legacy?

You will need an adapter to mate the engine and tranny together. Then you will need to make a kind of custom tranny crossmember, and then probably will need a different drive shaft, and possibly different half shafts for the front cv's. It has been done before, someone on USMB would be able to answer it with all the details. I do have a dual range sitting right in my shed:banana:. It would be awesome though!!!

Your other option is to have one shipped from Europe or Australia, that actually bolts right up to your engine. But you are lookin at a couple grand for that option and you'd have to find someone to actually ship you one.

In other words, it isn't a project for a rainy afternoon

But it would still be awesome

No it is a somewhat involved project. And yes, join USMB, there is lots of good info for older cars. And yes it would be AWESOME!!

If you like hack jobs and short life span, it is a great hack. After learning the real sube, the engine is the body, the body is the transmission and electrical. What do you think the sube is? 40 years of gm fbody? If they got any more precise with the combo, it would be going nuclear.

If to ask a "pro" getting tortured by this tranny behind an EJ, more than one at usmb has gone through with it.

I learned these cannot do everything when an EA81 saw 11:1 compression and a torque curve making Ej engines baby dolls in comparison. Like hacking tranny engine combos, stay american...or go get a dual range sube and hack it that way for the tranny...and that legacy body. good god kids, hasn't anyone spoken? it is a stretched thin 1987 GL. I left usmb for the reason of this question, among other things. you cannot just do anyhting you want to a sube.

to doubt my own ingenuity and extremes with false judgement would be a mistake.

to help you out a little bit, check the spring ratins in the back end of your sube by oem manuals. if 200 pounds or greater hack away and keep the mig handy.

It actually works great, and has been proven to withstand the power of the EJ motor very well. You have to be more open minded. The Legacys were built very well! And don't have a lot of the rusting issues that the older ones had, that isn't saying they don't rust. Subarus really are like Legos, many parts from one will fit another with very little work, and the parts all work well in unison! And..... I believe you didn't leave USMB, there was in fact another reason you don't go there anymore, I have heard all about it.

Legacies are great. I was drifting around back dirt roads today. Much fun
