ECU and self diagnostic 91 loyale

91 loyale wagon non turbo I am trying to figure out how to read the trouble codes, if i connect the green single pole connectors that are said to engage the self diagnostic the only result is a clicking sound from a small box with wires and air lines on the opposite side of the engine (i have no clue what it is). The check engine light does not provide a code, so that means the oxygen monitor light should be providing the code but im not sure where that is.

The initial problem is that the engine shut off whilst driving and will not start, will crank

Are you sure it's the green connectors and not black connectors? IIRC, the connectors you want are black. The CEL should flash long for tens (3 long flashes is 30) and short flashes for ones (6 short flashes after the 3 long would be 36).

I believe the only black terminal there is where a scanner would connect to, there is a set of white connectors, but there was no response on the CEL

I went through this too, similar model. As it turned out, the way the manual wanted it plugged in to check codes was the opposite...and run time, was again the opposite. That generation of sube will be trial and error. May be right by book, may be not. the codes are read on the blinking light on the ECU. The runtime code is stating what car it is, and that is when you can tell it is back to runtime. Do you have codes? I could list some, I have 600 pages of something or other here about that generation laminated.
