Explination of snow tires

I was trying to decide on the way home from Brunswick tonight on 295 if snow tires would be better or worse than all-seasons in this weather

1/2 centimeter of snow, but just below-freezing temperature.

 
when there is actual white frozen (or partially frozen wet sloppy) stuff on the road, snows are always better.

no exceptions

Mmmm, zero traction on my new(ish) all-seasons today in the snow.

Had some fun in an iced-over parking lot for one drift today in Topsham at Seadog Brewery (mmmm, brunch buffet was amaaazing). Come around a turn in the lot in second, little gas, slideways to the left side, slideways to the right side, then straighten out. The roads on the way to Lobstah's house weren't terrible, but I still could lose traction when I gassed it in second.

So yes, I now want snow tires, but no, I still don't have the money for them.

 
Talk to your parents. Maybe you could work something out if you say it is for you immediate safety.

This is why I've talked about tires ad nauseam. Everything else you want to add as a mod wont do crap if your tires wont connect you to the ground. Snow, dirt, dry, pavement, tires matter.

Glad you got some learnin' done without doriftu'ing into anything.

The Nasioc post is awesome. Using the foam is a fantastic way to demonstrate it and my mind was kinda blown once I was able to look at the spacial relationships in a blown up fashion.

 
that is an amazing read, nice find Nate.

I had a pretty good understanding of how snow/summer tires worked but now, having a visual representation it is very clear to see how they work and what a difference dedicated snows make.
