Front brakes

Chris

YARRR SUBY MONSTER!!
So a while ago I replaced my rear brakes and rotors because they were rusted to oblivion... But now my front brakes are making the good 'ol tired brake sound.

I'm gonna do the brakes myself, or have bratman help me out (they can't be to much different than the rear?).

But I have 2 questions.

1. what pads should I get? Anything better than stock that isn't to much more expensive?

2. Should I got my rotors resurfaced? Cause if I do, I may as well have who ever resurfaces replace the brakes at the same time, because they have to come out anyway.

thanks

this thread will generate quite a few different opinions. . .

getting them resurfaced is a fine option. however rotors from dba, or brembo, can be found cheaply, and are goop upgrades.

as for pads, there is nothing wrong with oe, but if you're taking them off, you might as well upgrade right?

hawk, ebc, and many others make suitable replacements. ... however, i would avoid the greenstuff's.... ive had them for a while, and probly wouldnt go back.

long story short. . . if you shop around, you can find nice schwag for short money.

Brembo OEM replacements cost me 36/each at International Auto Parts 2 years ago
That's not a bad price

So I checked online, and found this. And for $20 I see no reason not to get new rotors vs. resurface which will probably cost about that much anyway.

just making fun of their name

Don't know how the quality is though... consider shipping too though when you buy, 36 dollar Brembos might not be a bad deal. They are 2 years old on my car and holding up really well.

I also just got paid today for the show I'm working on... And I got paid a lot more than I expected. So I'll do some research and make sure I get something good

My opinion and experience, just go to the Napa in Damariscotta and get all your brake parts there. Pick up rotors and pads, a can of brake clean, and a tube of synthetic caliper grease, or if I help I have the synthetic caliper grease. They are what I've always used, and had very good luck with them. If you do it all yourself, which you can do if you did the rears, just make sure everything is lubed good when putting it back together. Where the pads meet the caliper bracket, put a small dab of the synthetic caliper grease so they slide freely, but also clean all the parts well before putting anything back together. Rust really sucks on brakes and make it a real pain when doing them!! I have had to use pb blaster and a torch several times. Good luck and feel free to ask for help!!

Good deal on the brembo rotors, for pads anything nailman said will work, if your going to buy from napa don't buy the really cheap pads, after about 25 miles they will start to squeak, I'd reccommend they're ceramic pads, they work good and are quiet, might be a little more money but to me its worth it, brakes are what stop your car so I don't see the point in cheaping out.

Thanks for the napa suggestion. I'll stop in tomorrow and talk to the guys there and compare prices to stuff online. Would be nice not to have to pay for/wait for shipping.

And I definitely won't go the cheapest route on brakes. I like being able to stop

So I was looking on the napa site to see what they have, and it comes down to 3 types of pads,

Ceramic

Organic

semi-metallic

I have done some reading, but I can't find anything that really sways me toward one type over another. Obviously everyone will have their own opinion on what to get, which is fine, I just need some more persuasion towards one type over another. The only option that is a bit lower on the list in metallic due to noise and quick wearing, but any info is helpful

thanks

do you need calipers too?

not sure from OP if that's part of your plan...OEM rebuilds are the way to go, they are like $70 each from autozone etc. special order item, but only a day or 2 to get em

Hopefully it doesn't rain Saturday... I need new brakes or else...

Ok, they aren't that bad yet...

So I picked up pads and rotors. Not 100% sure if I'm gonna need rotors, but if I do, I'll have them. And if not I'll just return them, no big deal.

I'll be working on the rs this weekend, you can do the brakes here if you want
Thanks for the offer, but I'm gonna be doing it with bratman.

Jason, did you say you had caliper grease and PB blaster, or should I pick some up?

I have some of both!! Getting a little low on PB but have enough, and have plenty caliper grease.
