gear oil dual range 87 subaru

boxer3main

<1.8 liter
I am having no troubles with it at 122k and 22 years...and it stays cool even after 500miles at once.Would like to change it out on a hot day this summer... the rear diff is also surprisingly quiet, with full lock in 4lo and lsd in 4hi and freed up in 2wd (einstein?!)

This needs a very careful decision about gear fluid.(seriously) I have read of the gl-5 ratings and lsd additive...extra s, redline and royal purple and well, I can't seem to get an answer correctly. <y last 87 got valvoine and it did not like it at first, but then magic happened..including 60mpg on a 300 mile trip. The 87 now is the dual range and must get correct for the extinction is upon us..

I would like to try castrol syntec 75w90. the front diff does not seem to be lsd, but the back is some kind of...(einstein?!) as it does it ALL with the lever in certain spots.

help appreciated.

Castrol SYNTEC Full Synthetic Gear Oil is a breakthrough in lubrication technology. Its full synthetic formula provides protection, durability and performance that far surpass conventional API GL-5 and MT-1 gear oils.

  • Full synthetic durability for maximum protection under severe driving conditions and added assurance during extended drain intervals.

  • Superior high and low temperature performance. Improved thermal stability and unsurpassed shear stability for superior wear protection.

  • Exceeds the service fill requirements of conventional andlimited slip differentials.

  • Fully compatible with all conventional and synthetic API GL-5 gear oils.

  • Meets the requirements of Mack GO-H/S.

am I missing anything? Also the syntec motor oil has been quite a miracle for the EGR tortured engine, and that is my reason for favoring castrol as first try.EGR removal needed an oil that does not act like high mileage oild by adding things, but promoting clean instead). syntec just right, especially for the half a millimetr lifters (nearly old school solid) Anybody else?

gear oil tech has progressed a good bit since 87, the syntec you mentioned will work xcellent....you'll unleash maybe 150 hp

I use NAPA brand 80w90 gear oil, and then put in a tube of their LSD additive. It worked great!! Are you sure you have an LSD? You would of had to build one, since they never came from the factory in your car. They came in the turbo models in 3.7 final drive. I have one built for my Brat and love it!! But the LSD additive made all the difference.

I guess I'll go with the syntec. Just taking the little 3 main to 100 hp breaks things...like a mystery beetle... Castrol has been there for some time for the delayed cat sucking fuel injections for some time, should work like a charm on the old scoob.

I did notice someone got to the fluids at least once, as it is thick and even aerated like old school 85w90 and clean.

and also, even for you wrx tuners sqeezing "HP"...90hp in '87 is 180hp to a 2 liter EJ. Believe It Or Not. I watched all that unfold before my eyes...it is still funny kids.
