No, they are talking about having a glass (or some other high heat material) fiber optic cable in the cylinder head to create a beam across the charge to ignite it. The laser it self could be outside the head connected to the other end of the fiber optic cable.

Then they said if they had a receptor fiber cable on the other side it could monitor the mixture to see how the engine is running.

 
I know a lot about lasers( I work with them) this is a good step to put in cars. Going to be able to do so much if this goes into future cars. They can fire a pulse within nano seconds and have it almost the right strenght all the time. Cann't wait to see what this does with performance.

Ah right, you were saying a while ago how you work with 30 bazillion dollar laser cutters and stuff.

The combustion engine really need a refresher... it has been the same basic idea for so long, EFI was really the last time combustion engines really had a major upgrade.

LOL, yea something like that. Yes I know the lastest was Direct Injection which Subaru has yet to go to. What the heck Subie you need to go ask Porsche for some help or something.

Camshafts are lame. It's time to have solenoid operated valves. You could do ANYTHING with timing and spark with these ideas combined.

obviously reliabilty for thousands of miles of driving is goign to be the issue but im sure they have that worked out.

the big question is will your car make that sweet laser beam sound fromt he movies when you rev the engine???
