Help passing the Cumberland County OBD2 readiness inspection

I'm trying to come up with a plan to pass the OBD2 test with an OBD1 motor in an OBD2 car. There are a few things that I don't know the answer to that could help me greatly.

1) Do they do the test with the car running or off?

2) If I take it out of Cumberland County, will they check to see my place of residence when it comes to this section of the test?

1 no idea

2 yes, last time i got a sticker somewhere other than evergreen they look at your registration to see where you live

I would think that MOST PLACES will not check your obd port if you don't have a check engine light. I have a code scanner if you want to try it and see what it says... I bet it just says no codes and it will pass.

I have a code scanner if you need to clear something before hand.
Awesome, thanks man... the only issue is that I'm trying to plan ahead for an OBD1 EG33 swap into a OBD2 97 Outback Sport

My current plan is to just bring it to a place in Biddeford, and if I'm asked where I live say that I just moved and haven't updated my address yet.

They will check and do the E class sticker if you live in CC or it says you do... Just wire in have two O2 sensors OR get a pre 96. I have seen it done before and pass... Most shops wont expect it. I don't remember anyone hooking my cars up (the newer ones) when I got a sticker.

Yea, I was in the same boat with my car. It was throwing a couple lights on my car, but with my aftermarket computer in it, it would shut the light off. I had one place check the computer and the other place didn't. It all depends on who you go to. Most places like local low end garages don't car too much about it, whereas the higher end dealers and what not will check them. Usually if the light doesn't come on they won't check it.

Seems like you could just unplug the CEL bulb (or put in a blown out one) and try the numbers game.

Did they check your codes with or without the motor running?

They did it with both the first time because they were a high performance shop.....they installed a downpipe for me cause i needed a catted one for an inspection. They gave me a bunch of codes, I got the car home and cleared them and was only left with two which were some o2 sensors which i have fixed.....but the CEL keeps coming back on. Its a P0420 code. I think i might still have a bad o2 sensor from my work which sucks! If im correct that's a rear sensor right??

Usually with the car off... you plug the scanner in and put the key to on but dont start. If it has a code it will do it either way... IF you wanted to get crazy with it leave the OEM STOCK ecu plugged into the obd2 port and have resistors in place to make it think it is still working... of course it would need to have a power wire hooked to it.... BUT THAT IS a lot OF TIME AND A WASTE IMO

If you are catless it is prob because you need o2 extenders (defoulers).

Hey, I just had a brilliant idea (NOT).

Someone with an Impreza go get an inspection, then swap windshields with me.

mwahahaha

Do they really test with the car off? I just moved to maine from NH last year, and in NH, they run the car for 5-10 min, shut down, plug in, and start the car and let it run while they check it.

No car yet. I'm a big planner. I like to know what I'm getting into before I get into it.
Hahaha I know what that's like. Every car that was on craigslist that I could afford (and a lot that I couldn't) I posted up in one of my threads and asked people their opinions on the model, the specific car's condition, and how much it would cost to get tip-top.

I think it took me a year to actually get one

Yeah.

What I'm thinking is just going ahead and grabbing that 97 OBS. If it all checks out that thing should be a winter beast. Then I can buy any parts car 95 or less sedan and send it off to PATHS to get all the body work done for cheap, and then swap the front ends and drivetrain with the OBS and scrap it or part that out. Then I have a sedan with 97 front end, 5mt, and everything in good condition ready for an h6 for pretty cheap... plus who knows, I might fall in love with the wagon and just want to keep it

Either way I want to figure out how to defeat the OBD2 code checking part of the inspection

If your going to send it to PATHS i recommend you talk to them supper early! I got my Camaro in there so they could paint it and we had to wait till the last minute to get it in!

your best bet is to register the car somewhere else if you want to guaranty a pass....

edit

its also for this reason not OBD1, but emission checking in general that i will never live in CC.

they check it with the key in the 'on' position, but not running.

i've had a tech tell me that he's seen people get a PO box in another town, register their car under that town and then get inspected. costs you the registration change though, and your license wont match. i suppose you could move it back though...
