bad wheel bearings often make a whumpwhumpwhump noise, and will change as you load suspension differently, like turning left or right
cupped tires make a very similar noise, but are less affected by loading susp back and forth
If it sounds like a helicopter it is probably a broken tire belt. Several years ago I put on expensive ( for an outback ) 225x60/16 Goodyear triple assurance 80,000 mile tires. They became soo loud at 35K I had to junk themhow about a broken belt in a tire
