Housing Situation

Did a little research into what I'd be able to afford at the present and well it wasn't too pretty.

Searched for houses in york and cumberland. Anything at or above 150k was a complete dump. Not to mention anything decent was pushing 300k!

I'd say something negative about Maine... but you get mad at me when I do...and you already summed it up for me...

Tell me about it... sold my house in Pittsburgh for $180k. Try to buy something equivalent here is gonna run me about $300k. Prices here are out of control. There's nothing decent around $150k... even a double wide in Freeport is $170k. If you're looking in Portland you're lookin' at around $225k-$275k for a shack.

Hence why i'm still renting. It's cheaper to rent than it is to buy.

Yup... salaries vs. housing costs are waaaay off. I look at some of these places and think, who the hell is buying these $400k houses and where do they work??? Cuz I wanna work there!

We're going to do a couple drive-by's tonite... There's one house that looks somewhat promising in Foulmouth... It's "affordable" in Falmouth so it's probably a dump. There's a crib on Silver Bqqst's street too for sale for like $180k... could be a good fix-er-upper... kinda close to Congress Street.

There is a house (chalet, nice) here in Naples on Rt35. $125K. I knew the previous owners, they were our baby sitter/ day care folks. No garage but has a big shed and big yard with a fenced area out back for kids or dogs. Its been on the market a few months so I know they'll go down if offer is serious. About 50 minutes to the exit 8 portland line area the way I go.

I'm not sure of current condition, but back in the 90s it was beautiful, mostly wood interior.

and the market is stupid. Costs to build is retarded, yet people are having a wicked hard time selling existing houses. My house was $93K in 1991, now its worth over $200k

We commute from Bath... the houses up there are decent and believe it or not at 5pm it's quicker to get to Bath on 295 from Maine Med than it was to Westbrook on congress and Stroudwater... 38 min door to door.. slightly longer in the am.

Hey runnah - Contact me! I'm an agent for Coldwell Banker covering Greater Portland; I can help you out with inventory, the market, pricing, and financing.

House prices are nutty, BUT they are less nutty than they were a year ago. And, there's a lot more to choose from.

We found another crib today... it needs some work but I think it's doable. If we decide to get it, i'll be giving away a nice BIG above ground pool. You disassemble... you haul.
