How much does a used STI shortblock go for?

Well as some may know I am looking at doing some work to the car. The smartest but no cheapest way for me to go is to get a brand new shortblock and take the pistons out and drop in forged units then put then rebuild the heads and button everything up.

Well that will leave me with my current shortblock as a spare. The motor is good. I am just burning oil so I think the rings are to blame.

Question how much do you guys think I could sell the used shortblock for? She would need new rings and pistons but that would be it.

It would come with the Oem forged crank and connection rods in it. I would just have them take the heads off then load it up and take it home.

Any ideas? Just seeing ways I might be able to recoup some money.

I will give you $50 cash! hell yeah! lol

on a serious note though, if it needs rings, then not a lot. That costs some serious money to split the case and it's a huge pain.. a new block from joel is only.. umm $1500ish??? It was last I talked to him about it a couple years ago. so take ~1500-parts-labor and you're in the ballpark which isn't going to be much.

Few hundred I believe? I think that's what nate sold his with blown rings for like a year ago

the big problem is that so many people have issues after splitting the case. things just don't end up running right after that. I'm not saying always, but it almost seems ''more often than not'' there is issues. If it was a V8, ****, those tear down to a bare block so easily it's not even funny. It's a lot easier to keep the price of used stuff, even that has issues, up higher.

58,000 as of right now. I have seen videos of the blocks being split it doesn't look like that big of deal. Just a lot of bolts and soom rubber mallet love. Think of all the people who throw in connecting rods and pistons. They have to split the block and 9/10 they always have a bullet proof engine in the end. I think it comes down to the machine shop and if they know what they are doing.

I think $400-$500 seems resonable if it came with pistons. Might get talked down a tad without.

before doing major engine work, make sure the oil consumption isn't due to something simple like a plugged PCV

shortbloks with 'issues' are unfortunately pretty common, which depresses pricing. if you want to upgrade your motor, the STI shortblocks are about $1800 all crated super shiny and ready for installation with your new goodies (with minimum worries about who built it and their experience level). nobody builds more subaru engines than subaru ya know!

$300-500 is the going rate depending on if there is any scoring on the walls how many bad rings etc.

What are you planning on getting for a new block?

EFI Logics has there own pistons that they drop into a new shortblock. So they buy the new block take out the new oem pistons drop theres in that they have put in countless other cars "so they say". The price includes new spark plugs and new ARP head studs. $2570 total without taking mine out and putting theres in.

I have heard from other people one guy says he has over 30k miles on the same block they have built and has had zero problems with it.

Looking about $6500 in parts and labor for the following:

New Stage 2+ ACT clutch

New timing belt kit. includes the water pump, gates belt, tensioner and pullys

New Oil Pump

BC exhaust and intake valves

BC springs and TI retainers

Rebuild the heads

New Seal kit includes every gasket and seal that is on the car Head gaskets also.

The New shortblock with the forged pistons, arp head studs, spark plugs.

New aftermarket oil pickup.

Tune on there dyno.

talk to M&A. maybe pick up a clean shortblock (blown ring still), have them split it and build it like they did nates. then figure out where to get the heads done. nate's from Raw were pricey but insanely high quality.

i may be interested in your shortblock if you decide to sell >:-)

Im not going to spend a lot of time convincing you cause I really dont care but just call Ron from raw performance http://raw1performance.com/. Tell him how much you have to spend and what you have left of a longblock and he will turn it into magic. He did the heads on my car and his work is second to none. I would even go with him over cosworth. If you dont want to ship your short block M&A did a fantastic job with mine and put some forged pistons in for cheap. Plus they are local.

I have heard that Raw performance is pretty good. They acutally offer a new shortblock now. Its a new oem shortblock they balance and put in CP pistons. Have heard good things about them. I have talked to M&A. They did a quote up for me and seems pretty good. They did it without the new pistons dropped in though. I don't know how much that would cost?

when you had your block redone did they rehone the block. That is what I am worried about. I want to make sure there is a good seal for the pistons so they seat well.

Yea they had it machined and it works flawlessly and you know my luck with motors. I got a set of cp pistons for retarded cheap just pm importimage on nasioc and ask him for the best price shipped. I dont trust a lot of people with my car but M&A have always taken good care of my car.
