I opened this ladies blog, and like 17 browser windows came up, I forced my computer to shut off, (this happened a couple times this past week), I turned it on, it asked if I wanted to start it regularly or in safe mode, I chose "regularly" (as stated: this happened several times before). It hung forever, so I forced it to shut down again, then they asked me when starting up if I wanted to start it in "repair mode" I said "sure" thinking it would repair it. It hung for a bit, then a big white arrow comes up on the black screen and just sits there. I am soooo deathly afraid that I just funked my computer up big time! Gabe is going to be TICKED!! Can someone please help me!!?! I am online looking at solutions and it's not looking good considering i don't have a back up disk. OH MY GOD, PLEASE HELP ME!!!

I have a Toshiba Satellite P-305-s8814 And now Gabe knows about it. I know the largest Vista package is on it.

I never got the prompt again, should I try pressing f8 as I start it up? I just saw the hourglass appear. I just tried pressing f8 after turning it off and back on, and the computer bleeped really lou, and I have the "start up repair and normally options

Ugh, repair mode...

So you see a cursor? That's a good sign. When I did "repair mode," it messed up my partition and I was too lazy to rebuild it so I just got it good enough to get to my files and reformatted.

The web browser thing sounds like either a bad advertisement, weird popups, or some sort of adware. This probably doesn't help now though.

Yeah, try the F8 on startup and if you can ... go into safe mode. You can call me if you want, Gabe should have my number.

so with a bit of patience (try having patience during a time like this), I finallu got a blue and gray box with "System Recovery Options" asking me to select my Operating System..... "If you do not see your operating system listed, click Load Drivers to load drivers for your hard disks". Uhmmmmm, yes it says "FOR your hard disks" NOT "FROM". So, do I pop a blank disk in, or is that their typo and they want me to find drivers FROM my hard disks?

if i could make a suggestion it would be to shut it down until someone qualified can get there hands on it. because from the sounds of it its getting worse, and any mention of recovery, and hard disks, etc, is getting awfully close to disaster....

now I have the options of chosing my recovery tool:

Startup Repair

(Automatically fix problems that are preventing Windows from starting)

I finally decided to click on that (even though I'm quite sure it was hat I was running at start up), and will let it take it's course.

System Restore

(Restore Windows to an earlir point of time)

If I click yes I get this: To perform an offline system restore, you must specify which Windows installation you would like to restore. For example, if the installation in "C:Windows" should be restored, enter the following command: rstrui.exe /OFFLINE:C:Windows

Windows Complete PC Restore

(Restore your entire server or personal computer from a backup image)

I clicked on this thinking nothing was happening, then I just so happened to see it behind the big list, so I looked at it and there was this scanny thing looking for backup disks. Then the exclamation point popped up saying: A valid backup location could not be found. Windows cannot find a backup for this computer. Attach the backup hard disk or insert the final DVD from a backup set and click Retry.

Uhmmm no thanks.

Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool

(Check your computer for memory hardware errors)

When I click "check for errors" it does NOT restart and then it tells me: Windows can NOT check for memory problems. A problem is preventing Windows from checking memory problems during start up. Try to check for problems again by running the tool manually. WHAT TOOL?!?!

Command Prompt

obvious what this does, which I've used the command prompt in the past, but never for anything this serious, so I am scared to death to type anything, and if I did, would it even do any good?

TOSHIBA Recovery Wizard

has the SCARIEST message, it gets all black and red and says: WARNING! When the recovery is executed, all data will be deleted and rewritten. If you are restoring from a backup, did you make sure to backup all important data and cnfigure Windows the way you want it restored? Please connect the AC adapter.

HELL NO - I HAVE NO CLUE WHAT THAT IS, AND AM NOT TAKING MY CHANCES!!!

So much for going to bed 2 1/2 hours ago.

I hope I can get the neccisary help in the morning. Thanks Spin.

Oh my goodness!! I'm in, I'm in!!!!! I have a new laptop lap thingy, I wonder if it overheated my computer or something cause everything is working beautifully now! Thank you everyone!

Spin, I have Windows Vista Home Premium

that would be cool, thank you so much for all of your help! My Godmother told me it was Mercury Retrograde that did it to my computer. After seeing over 50 vehicles broken down on the side of the road in ONE day, I pretty much believe her.

You did better than I would have, I would have smashed it, I have zero patients with computers. Good job Kati!

Hey Kati, both of the burnable dvds I have in my bag have some weird marks on them ... they were in a case but they've been in there a while. If you can bring a new one to Lobstah's, I'll burn it for you when you get there.
