Hmm, well, from what the Mint says, pennies in circulation can weigh anything from 2.4g - 3.2g. Now given that wear/tear, tarnishing, and other shenanigans can modify the weight of a coin once it's out in the wild, I though that 2.8 would be a nice round average.
