Information Overload

Ok, I'm a newb. I don't know squat about my 08 WRX other then it's a freaking blast to drive.

I've been checking out NASIOC pretty regularly trying to get some knowledge in my little pea brain.....and all I'm sure about is that I'm not sure about anything.

So I'm hoping you guys might be able to help me answer some questions.

I'm thinking that a Stage I is a computer program/reflash that requires no mods. I think M&A said that they'd be able to do this soon. My questions about this are....

Are there different MAPs for the Stage I?

If so is there one that seems to be better then the others and where would I get that?

What is the performance increase (approx) with Stage I (10hp, 20hp?)

Next series of newb questions....

My significant other doesn't want a loud annoying ride or the "whistle" sound that some modded turbos make when revving/letting off. Personally I kinda like it but she's the one driving it most of the time (damnit!!!).

What causes this? I was thinking about getting a K&N air intake set up but I'm concerned that I'll spend $300+ on it and she'll be bent and want it off.

Does the downpipe contain a converter and does it go from the turbo to the intermediate pipe? Is there one that's better then another? Does it create issues with your warranty?

What are the necessary mods to accommodate a Stage II tuning?

With a Stage II and the necessary mods how much can I expect out of my 08 WRX?

Thanks for your time all. I really appreciate it.

well a true stage one is a reflash a intake and a catback exhaust. the exhaust isn't a must have a u wont see much int he way of performance gains with it just a nice sound. you do however have to do an intake with stage one reflash. now what kind of intake all depends on what stage one flash you go with. i personally am plannign to do a xpt stage one reflash here within the month. now with there flash i either have to put a k&n drop in filter with my stock air box or do a aem cai. that's what they have it tuned for.

the loud sound you hear when you let off the gas is from a blow off valve that releases the iar built up int he turbo into the air. you wont hear that sound unless u put a new blow off valve on wich i highly recommend againt. the stock one we have is just fine.

now when you add a intake you will here more turbo noise but it wont be super loud like cars with aftermarket blow off valves

were you thinking about doign the k&n short ram? if so i would personally save your money. our stock air box in the car is actually a pretty good setup and a short ram will only suck in hotter air than a stock air box with a drop in K&n.

for the stage one xpt map you can actually download it onto a laptop and its only 52 bucks.

http://www.xpttuning.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=47&products_id=94

now what u need is a tactrix cable to hook it up to your car to download it

http://www.tactrix.com/

thereare some people on this site who have one you can maybe use for the day it dosent take long to do

as far as the dowpipe goes you can get catted or uncatted. the uncatted obviously will make your car louder but even puttign a catted downpipe will still increase exhaust as well as turbo noise. now so you know adding a downpipe will void your warranty to you have to make sure you think about it.

to do stage two you need the downpipe as well as a catback exhaust and a stage 2 tune and u r good to go

so bottom line think about what type of intake setup up you want to do and get a staghe one that is made fo rthat intake i.e perrin stage one with perin inatek etc etc. the good part abotu these is u dotn need to bring it to a garage to tune it. only reason u woudl need a garage is if you dont want to get the cable yourself

hope this helps

Welcome aboard- if your happy with your WRX you should stay away from here! Otherwise you will find your credit bills climbing and you will always want the next level of performance---be warned! If your smart you will leave now!!!

Okay, your still here, so you can't just leave well enough alone huh, welcome aboard!

1st- Don't waste your time on NASIOC, you're running a 3rd Generation car you want to get familiar with 3GWRX.COM and this site as well.

2nd- stg1 is a computer reflash. For your 08 that means about 30hp give or take. This can be done alone, no other mods are needed.

3rd- NO INTAKE MODs without the proper tuning for that particular intake! First off you will require a reflash for that particular intake, and you will get the under the hood noise your girl doesn't want! It won't get you any extra power, Cobb tuning and other pros such as RalliTek and Surgeline say the factory intake setup on our cars is good until about 350- 375HP. If you talk to these guys you would learn that at this point you require a fmic (front mount intercooler) and because of space, location, etc, this is when they change to a different cold air set-up. that's right I said different because you already have a cold air setup, factory, that flows very well. People tend to change for the noise, just like bov (blow off valves) not necessarily for the power. This could open up another can of worms where you could get power at the expense of running lean and we shouldn't be talking about this yet=== stay away from intakes for now, period!

4th- A dp (Downpipe) means you must run a stg 2 reflash, and some reflashes require a full tbe (turbo-back exhaust), depending on the Reflash or "map". You can read more about dps on the forums, not going into that now.

stg 2 gains for your car, 08 tend to be around 40hp. Or about 10hp over stg1 and about 15 foot pounds torque over stg 1.

Spend some time on 3GWRX- you won't get miss information from different years, and set ups- its all 3rd Gen cars!

Stay away from Nasioc not unless you go there just to find some info that is there. The site is full of douchbags. No punn intended for those on here that are over there.

OK. Just checking. You know, new people not knowing how much fun they are legally allowed to have while driving.

Maybe I'm weird but that seems like you're just beating the ever living sh!t out of your car. I really don't want to do that.

So much NASIOC hate on MS. It's a great site and has lots of info. Ok yes, there can be a lot of BS that goes on over there, but ignore that stuff and NASIOC is full of good info.

Wait a minute- not fair. Don't make this something its not, there is no hate or bashing going on here. There is some good info to be had on there (NASIOC), unfortunatley you have to filter through a lot of mis-information and trash talk to find it. Some of the wrong info can cause you a lot of head aches and car problems. Now as I said, he has a 3rd Generation car and a lot of the earlier information and set ups don't pertain to 3rd Gen cars. If you have a 3rd Gen car you serve yourself much better with 3GWRX.COM! that's what the whole site is dedicated to, and the information is spot on. So chill my friend, its all good, enough said, lets not hi-jack this thread...

Drag racing beats the crap out of your engine and drive train. You are pushing it to it's limits every run. In Autocross you are shooting for the engine/drivetrain to be in the optimal zone (Sweet spot) for power and torque. Going around corners fast is only asking the suspension to do its job. The wheels go up and down, springs load and unload, struts slow this motion down. You are not actually asking anything more from your suspension than it was designed to do. When you exceed the suspensions limits, you loose grip. Now admittedly, tires are a different story. Those do take a beating, but there are people out there who have run their race rubber (Falken Azenis RT-615's, an ultra high performance street legal summer tire, not R compounds) on the street as their daily driving tires and said that there was about 1000-2000 miles different in the longevity vs. no autox. Different tires will wear differently but the fun is totally worth the extra wear. Of coarse, if you get hooked, the right tires will be the biggest single upgrade you can do. They will make it more fun and improve your times.

The original reason that I asked the question is because you actually have a really great car to autox. There are people who will disagree because of the monster understeer, but I have fun in mine every event. And you will actually (depending on your driving skill) do better than me, even at Stage II. There is another guy with a 08 or 09 that has been getting the fastest times on street tires, even though he is on stock rubber and in a r-comp class. Just for clairification, if you leave your car completely stock, NO modifications, no debadging, no new intake, etc. you can run in the stock class and use R-compound tires. If you even remove the badges from your car, or any other not approved (stock class) mod, you will be in different class. I'll stick with the badge mod, if you remove them, you will be bumped up to the street tire class. Which means that you must use street legal tires but are able to do a specific list of modifications as well like tuning, exhaust, coil-overs, ect. More mods means different classes.

If you want to improve your driving skills, the best thing to do is stay in a stock class on street tires for a year. Learn how to "CORRECTLY" drive your car and then decide if you want to get some r-comps or you want some go fast bits and don't mind moving to another class.

If you have any more questions, there is an AutoX this week up in Bath.

http://www.cumberlandmotorclub.com/acrosss.htm

I'll be there and I would be happy to take you for a ride. Hell, I might let you drive my car if we do some fun runs.

OK, I'll stop thread jacking now.
