is there anybody who has had an exhaust on 98ish outback or similar 2.5 that can verify the headers are uel and give the famous subie rumble? i have a parts outback i can rob headers off of to put on my 2.5i (equal length headers) but i dont want to lay under it and wrench in the cold unless i know they'll sound sexy

huh.... all the videos on yous tubes for leggys that general year sounded grumbly, and most said all they did was swap the muffler. is it just my specific year that they screwed with it to make them sound like a civic?

trust me, ive worked on a lot of legacys from 90-99 and none have UEL headers. the only ones close to having a UEL are the 90-94 with the cat built into the front pipe.

the muffler gives it some decent sound but you don't get the full effect without a uel header....ebays cheap...right around 100 bucks...but they don't always fit well.

rumble

You will gain some rumble compared to the lack of rumble in the 06+ using the 98 manifold. To get decent rumble you will need a true header like a Borla or ebay Borla replica.

Mike is right. The NAs are equal length, but not as equal as the 06+. Our 07s are exact equal length, making them sound more like hondas, but Subaru gained 7hp doing that (ports remained continuous longer than the older manifold type). I think you need to disregard what the girlfriend says and get the eBay Borla replica headers, straight pipe all the way to the catback, maybe a glasspack/cherry bomb resonator...maybe. We used a cherrybomb on the RX-7 for a resonator, then another for the muffler. Worked good and lasted 5 Maine winters. Use the muffler you have on it now. I might be interested in your stock header with cat. I was thinking about cutting the cat off and doing a catless equal length header in my car, and saving my catted header for when I decide to sell and return to stock. I'm more concerned with those last couple HPs than sound. To me the stock header on the 06-07 NAs is the shizznit. It don't get any better until they jumped to the long stoke 2011 Foresters with the timing chain for the NA cars.

WHY? Just do it. They are cheap, fun, stainless, and they work. Wake up that lethargic 2.5. Give 'er some !!!!!

I would, but my woman is already pissed I'm buying a set of steelies from garret, she doesn't even know about the saggy butt spacers and planned yoko geolanders
