loose shifter

sooch

Type-RA
I went and drove my friends subaru the other day, and I noticed how much stiffer his shifter is. mine feels very loose and has a lot of play even when engaged in each gear. Anyway to fix this problem without breaking the bank and is it an easy fix? thanks for the help ahead of time.

Shifter bushings wont fix the wobble, you need to replace the joint that attaches the linkage to the transmission. It is a pain to get off sometimes, I remember using an air hammer to persuade the old one on my car.

check out Turn-In Concepts...google em up.

TIC makes a great replacement kit to repair the knuckle linkage. on early cars, the linkage is riveted together and is basically not repairable. later cars GD seeries etc have parts bolted together so they're easier to fix piecemeal.

Short shifter, shifter bushings, and new knob!
I like the new knob idea!! and yes short shifter might come soon....

There is also a snap-ring type thing that caused my shifter in my 2009 WRX with a short throw to get all loose feeling even though I had all the kartboy bushings to. I told the dealship and they checked it out, somehow it popped apart and my shift lever was able to pull up outward from the socket. Felt really wierd, but it still worked. You might want to take off the shifter boot and have a look.

that snap ring goes around the white bushing that holds the ball part of shifter in place. can't access it easily from inside the car, it lives down underneath. and yes, if that ring falls out, the shifter goes all wonky...and makes you DNF a very expensive rally. don't axe how I learnt that!

loose snap ring is most likely NOT sooch's problem...car would be stranded by now, unable to shift in or out of any gear.

Huh, I don't know. The impression I got was that this snap ring was on the top in mine, but mine is a 2009. I don't know how similar or dis-similar the designs are but I know mine did not strand me, it just made the shift lever feel loose and jiggly with a jingling type sound. The dealship sounded like they didn't think it was a big deal and they fixed it pretty quickly.

well, if snap ring fails or falls off, the ball on shifter can pop out of that white cup...and once it pops out believe me, the car does NOT shift at all. sounds like yours was loose but didn't pop out.

yea that's not the problem at all, everything looks fine from inside the car, I just need to find time to get under it...
