I'm looking for a good shop to bore/hone my STi block.

I am going to go with 100mm Wiesco Pistons

I understand a cylinder is a cylinder, but it would be nice to find someone with subaru experience. Or just some one that is good at what they do!

Thanks,

Joe

My Audi's race block is sitting at Engine Works Unlimited in Raymond. It was cleaned, dipped, a few broken studs removed, checked for cracks, bored out for new JE pistons, yadda yadda yadda.

So what did they say? I post up on your other forum. good luck.
They are capable of handling it, i guess shorty has used them too. they told me to drop everything off when i get the pistons in.

But ya i called MnA and they gave me the number for the guy they use. he sounded really unsure of the whole thing, and that he would have to look at the block first...

well, the guy referred by M&A has probly seen some pretty screw-up Subie blocks before! I can understand his wanting to see what's up -- and really suss out the situation-- before saying anything. That's the sign of a really good machinist.

I know M&A did STInates motor in his old 07' sti and he had no problems. The block is a pain I have heard to take apart and even more so to assemble you going to do it yourself? I know everything has to be so so. If you use to mush sealant that's bad not enough that is bad. Really critical on our cars.

yeah you dont want excess sealant seeping into the oil when you bolt the halves together and extra stuff squeezes out.

i've heard good things about butler mcmaster, although engine works unlimited seems to be the place to go for everyone in this area. i believe they quoted me like $120 a while back, but i cant remember. they can also do the assembly for you, but they prefer to build the whole thing so they can warranty it.

really though, nowhere in maine do they have a torque plate for the top of a sube motor and that's really what they should have. you may want to strip it all the way down to the case and just ship it for ~$75 to a place that can do it the really right way so you dont end up with distorted bores once you bolt the heads on.

Evan this is almost where it is better just to buy a brand new block the just drop in some forged pistons. Then you don't have to worry about if the shop did it right or not. You know its right. You just have to make sure you installed the pistons correctly.

I have been thinkng about doing this. Save the money buy a block from EFI Logics. they have a deal. You get a new sti block and they load there own special pistons in it and also put on ARP head studs with new spark plugs and its only like $2600. So all you need is a new oil pump, water pump, timing belt and head gaskets.

I talked with them a few years ago about rebuilding my vette engine...then seem quite capable of working on many engines..Along with a good local reputation.

Yea, he does pretty good work. He did a pair of sea-doo blocks for us a while back as well. Just don't ever tell him "no rush". He gets a bit backed up as he's really busy all the time...tell him not to rush, and you may never see your engine, haha.
