03 Forester Auto about 45,000k.

This nosie is a very loud resinating nosie in the cabin. Sounds like a very low frequency version of rubbing your wet finger on a rim of a glass. MAJOR P.I.E.!! (pain in the ear) :

The nosie appears when going above 50mph.

Seems to be eminating from the rear of the car.

Nosie will dissappear if brakes are applied.

Emergency brake application has no effect on nosie.

The nosie does seem to be accomanied by a possible shimmy.

I don't think its a bearing.

Doesn't affect the speed/performance of car.

I did change the Pads a few months ago and I didn't use that sealant to adhear the pad to the caliper.

I was thinking that its a loose pad vibrating in its housing...?

Wheel Bearing Maybe. If it is starting to go it will howl. Applying the brakes just stablizes the rotor some. It is easy to check. From what I hear some Foresters have bearing issues. Mine had a rear one replaced 40,443 miles

Alright Dan! You turn your back on us for months and then come out of the woodwork when you need help. Then, you never report back with what it is. Sooooo, what was it?

Had a similar noise in my 00 RS, howl/hum at certain highway speeds. Same symptoms and results you mention above.

Turns out it was the rear diff...warranty replaced, thank you subaru.

Good Luck.

I had heard a bad wheel bearing before and it sounded nothing like the noise in the Foz, so I expected some bad news.

However we lucked out! It was a bearing and it was replaced free of charge. ;D

I didn't think that bearings were covered under the drive-train warranty...?

I just send my wife in with the baby, I never go in. Mostly because I can't shut my mouth in telling them what the problem is with the car and how to fix it. :

You shouldn't have to get pissy. They don't want you mad and they want your car fixed. The noise was gone when you picked it up, I'm sure they thought it was fixed. Otherwise you wouldn't have gotten it back.

Don't forget, it might be another problem that sounds the same. Parts break everyday.

maybe that is how it goes at evergreen.. but I have seen different at another un named dealer. and it's not Patriot.

I know of a bunch of peeps who had probs with rear diffs on early SG Foresters... more of a whine noise... but it should be covered under warranty.
