Multiple Air Filters?!

So the K&N for the OBK arrived today so I slapped it in. The 08 OBK has more of a "ram air" intake than any other subie i've seen. The under hood scoop similar to the one on the WRX goes directly into the airbox rather than into the snorkus in the fender. It hits the paper pleated filter directly. BUT! upon removal of the pleated paper filter, there's ANOTHER filter right behind it?!!?! It's like a big cotton pad kinda thing. WTF is that?!

don't remove that or your EPA rating goes to raisin. that's the tech that lets if put out cleaner air then it takes in in LA

I thought the PZEV stuff was for exhaust... not intake... wtf... slowin' me down beeyatches saving deer & rabbits.

Weird! Mine (a 2005) just had the wafer thin paper filter.

not to hijack this thread, but didja get the kartboy in there? I'm considering trying that out, but it looks a little scary!

Mike, I know what you're talk about. Dont know the purpose of it but it does keep large debris out. I think the whole thing is poorly designed. You wouldn't believe all the chunks of leaves and sand I pull out of that cotton screen while doing 30Ks or 60Ks. Its like the lid doesn't fit well and/or because of its perpendicularnous (staright up and down -ness) the bottom of the box where the lid hooks in collects a lot of junk...resulting in junk on the wrong side of the panel filter.

Someone somewhere got paid big bucks to design that. Hopefully they moved that guy to a different dept.

If you look closer, you'll see a rather large bulbous thing below the box going down into the fender, similar to a snorkus on your WRX, Forester, or any other Scooby, except its way forward of where they used to be. Oh, and your OBK hood weighs about 700lbs more than previous model years. Hopefully that guy gets early retirement.

I didn't see a snorkus... or any possible intake into the filter box from anywhere but the scoop on the 700 pound hoodline. Odd. Could the crap be getting in there from someone putting the box back together and not clipping the bottom??? I could see that happening quite easily as it was a royal beeyatch to get back together. Kinda like on the WRX where it was easier to just take the whole box out, insert k&n, clip it all back together then reinstall.

I'll tell ya though... she drive a lot sweeter with the kartboy short shifter installed...
