New England Rust

HATER DAN
Since my parts are delayed till monday the earliest, I worked on the jeep this weekend to prep it for sale.

The rockers had been rusty, so I decided to take care of it this weekend. On the XJ's, the rockers are hollow, and once you get a pinhole in them, they fill with water and dirt/mud and rot from the inside out.

So after using tin snips and cutting open 19 inches of metal, I was able to reach into the rest of the rockers and pull out hand fulls of dirt and rust. The dirt just sits in the rocker holding water rotting it.

After cleaning and tearing out the hand fulls.

Took a rag and filled the inside of the rocker with chassis saver.

Sizing up the metal.

Welded in.

Skim coat of bondo to level it, then two coats of chassis saver to seal it up proper.

snowmen are great huh.....theyll be doing my quarters when I drop it off....I hate rust

what exactly is "chassis saver"

have the feeling I might need a couple gallons of it......old RS, old F-250, old Volvo, boat trailer, etc etc

I like body work. It takes more than just brute strength and a big hammer to make things right. I hate seeing when people just fill a large hole with body filler and then think that it's going to hold. Nope! I will check in with ya in a couple months and see how that works out!! Generally not well.

Your repair, though, looks as good as any will get. Good job!

Chassis Saver is a slightly cheaper POR15 knockoff. It's a paint that absorbs moisture as it hardens. It supposedly "stops rust permantently". While I'm sure it does a great job, I cut out the rust, weld in new metal, and use it as a sealer.

I bought a Gallon and have plenty for future projects.

Thanks. Bondo is usually the go to for body work. The problem is, it sucks water in and holds it, further rusting the vehicle. I'm going to be doing work on a friends hundayi that has bondo slapped on, that should be fun.

When it comes to body work, it goes like this:

Pick two:

cheap

rugged

pretty

I go for cheap and rugged. They're not show car quality but damn it, it's done right.

If I remember right, the rule of thumb for Bondo is about 1/8" and anything thicker will crack. And It's not to fill holes, just level. You should have seen the fender I patched 9ish years ago on my old legacy. I just held it behind the original panel and welded it in place. It was sturdy enough alright! Apparently it didn't look as bad as I thought it did, because they didn't notice it when I traded it in. I'm not sure how, but they didn't. I even got 1100 in trade in for something I paid 400 for.. Anyway, It's fun to work on something like this when you want to. I hate doing it because I have to. I generally hate working on anything when I have to actually. Like when the tailpiece on my bike broke into a mess of pieces and my dog chewed on them and I was WAY too poor to buy a new one. That repair took a couple days. Never can tell now! :-)

There are people out there that are pretty good with making bondo stick.

Whoever did the bondo work on my GL (PO before Jason, probably) did some of the most fantastically bad bondo work I've ever seen.

He managed to completely create the inner fender well AND most of the bottom rear quarters entirely with bondo. And what looked like rocks out of his driveway. And it almost looked half way decent before it all fell out. It was hard to tell it was bondo. Until one day I was kicking ice build up off and my spare tire jack fell out of the trunk... I knew something was up...
