I have a hot rod with a 289 ford in it and for some reason it wont go over 40 mph and starts bucking even if you stomp on the gas.. I have checked every thing I could think of and still no solution. Any ideas? I need someone's else's perspective.

does it idle ok and rev up decent while parked?

Popping in the exhaust or intake?

Throttle adjusted correctly? (hey I've seen it happen, Olds Rocket...ah nevermind, long story)

old 289..original disty...

check the classic checks.

whip out the file. clean the points. adjust the tune by ear like grandpa would. ok. I am just guessing.

v8 and fuel is not like a zero. the v8 and fuel probs is right away. I guess ignition.

this is just a suggestion, but you could have fouled or bad spark plugs: or it could be the distibutor. I know it is a different motor, but those are the usual trouble spots for the symtoms you have in smaller motors.
