I tried a search came back with nothing am sure this has been beat to death but... i have a 2011 impreza is it a waste to use synthetic oil? I was thinking amsiol i am on my second oil change and only use subie oil filters opions?sugestions?

young car..

just follow suby rules...

synthetic is good, it seems its all good, favorite brands.

the paper oil filers are silly, but maybe subaru wants you to use theirs?

other than that, just about anything for filters, they do next to nothing anyway.

Dont use a fram filter. I use the next step down just because they are built better believe it or not. I get the Pronto filters when Subaru, Mobil 1 or K&N Gold filters are not available. The simple reason is that FRAM is like MAYTAG or QUAKER STATE OIL. Everyone thinks they are good because they advertise how good they are right to death, unfortunately the truth is that they suck balls and this is why they advertise so much. If you don't believe me, buy a $3.50 Pronto, a $5 Fram and a $8 Subaru filter and cut them in half. You will only be out about $18 but you will know which brands are better. The fram total crap.

we sell the pronto filters now at vip...also have crappy fram and mobil 1.....they actually sell the fram as a step up filter over pronto......if the people only knew!!!

I use supertech filters and the supertech high mileage oil and lucas oil treatment. that's what my 1998 outback with 217k + miles gets

Rather than creating a new topic about my oil question, I figured I would just ask it here.

Right now I am running 10w-30 and thought I was alright, but then the other day I went to add oil to my car (it burns 1 qt every couple weeks) I noticed my oil was extremely thick (like molasses)

Should I switch to 5w-30, or a different weight? Is there any certain brand I should get? I have been using Mobile 1 5000 10w-30, but I think it's too thick for the temperatures we have been having.

I also noticed a small knock the past few days that we have had cold weather, is it because my oil is so thick?

Or should I run 0w-30?

Knock? You mean tick? If you are truly talking about knock I highly doubt it has anything to do with the oil you're using. Also if you are talking about audible knock that is most likely much more than a little and you should have it checked out.

I ran 5W-30 during the winters with no issues.

Yeah, it is more of a tick. I got a chance to listen to it well today and it is a tick. I picked up a bunch of 5w-30 dino oil (my oil wasn't changed that long ago, so as my car loses oil I will just add the 5w-30) I found out the oil I was using was 10w-40. I guess I will just make sure my car has extra time to warm up before I put too much of a strain on the motor.

If you're talking about the 99 impreza in your info thing on the left, it's supposed to have 10w anyway. I wouldn't run 5w, that stuff is water thin.

Just about any good grade oil and filter will work if you change every 3 k under normal driving conditions. If you race, rally or drive in dusty conditions than you need to change more often. One of the best things to prolong engine life if you buy a new car is to change the oil after the 1st 1k .

I still wouldn't run 5w in an older suby engine. One, it calls for 10w, and 2 the bearings have been proven not to like thin oil.

I looked around quite a bit, and 5w-30 (some times even 0w-30) has been recommended by quite a a few people for winter. I plan on adding the 5w-30 for the rest of the winter, and once it gets into the warmer months switching back to 10w-30 (or should I use 10w-40?)

It's just my oil was so thick, the closest thing I could think of that it was like would be maybe honey.

I checked around my car (I carry 3 quarts usually, plus the 2 quarts I just bought) and I have some 5w-30 (stuff I just bought) 10w-30 and 10w-40, it is all Mobil 1 5000. Which 10w should I use in the summer? I have no idea where I got the 10w-40, I usually use 10w-30.

I add maybe a half quart of Lucas Oil Treatment, it makes the oil a bit clingier and helps quiet that annoying tap-a-tap-a-tap-tap on cold startup

when it's )(&&^%&^%$@@@ cold, whatever oil u got will act all goopy.

10W is fine for your 2.2 OBS, don't get Anaylisis Paralysis about oil. just keep it changed regularly and don't beat on the motor till it's warmed up a bit and she'll go on for years.
