Open loop to often WTF?!

Chris

YARRR SUBY MONSTER!!
So today I left a doctors appointment, and my engine was running at 2000rpms. And stayed there even though I tapped the throttle (engine temp was 145

interesting.

if it is IACV and idle stays up, could it be responding to fuel being too much, therefore, not an error...it is getting fuel air right.

IACV used to be "air bypass", unless there is still a function for this on your sube seperately?

it is a strong weather lately, my pcs reveal it. I wouldn't be surprised if problem goes away.

Def sounds like a leak. Whether it be inside the throttle body, or vacuum leak, or misinterpretation of the MAF its getting more air than its measuring.

*make sure your MAF is fully plumbed correctly. Everything needs to be attached, you need a enclosed straight shot from MAF to the engine. After air exits the MAF its all metered and accounted for. More or less will mess crap up.

*Remove throttle body, clean throttle body inside and out with throttle body cleaner. Make sure you clean out the IAC passages and the little valve motor area. Reinstall.

Drive it again. if its still not fixed look for vacuum leaks.

It is actually working again. I unplugged the battery for a while. Which fixed that and the ABS issue. So now it is working again properly. Some weird computer glitch.

I'm pretty glad. I don't know what was ailing it, but it was really annoying. It really did seem like an air leak. But then the loop would close an it would be back to normal. anyway. it's gone now.

Yeah, weird. I'm gonna have to keep this in my bag of tricks. Thanks!

but I really believe possibly something else might be happening intermittently, as you said, "a glitch." But, the glitch might have been caused by a bad ground or short to power or something funky that isn't triggering the fit at this time. The symptoms sounded like a vacuum leak or stuck idle valve.

Hopefully for you this is the end of any issues. Please post up any new episodes of irregularity.

Yea, I will. I'm kind of upset I didn't have to do anything besides reset the computer to fix it. It leaves me with an unknown as to what was actually going on.

First I thought valve sticking open, but the scangauge was saying the loop was open, if the valve was stuck open, wouldn't the computer be reporting it as close, and throwing a CEL because it was actually open?

It depends. If it thinks something is ok then it wont worry about it. Like EGR valves. It has no way of knowing what position it is other than it knows it has voltage or not, but if its stuck open it will run like poop and never set a code.

So it is intermittently back. When warmed up it idles between 825 and 850 rpms, and the computer keeps wanting to open the loop when it doesn't need to.

But then it will randomly stop. The idle part does kinda sound like a vacuum leak though. I should do a thorough check of the intake to see if I have any leaks. And maybe pull off the IACV and clean it? I'll read the service manual/look online to see how to do that.

If it were my car...

Listen for hissing sounds. I'd hit all vacuum leak suspect spots with brake clean. A small quirt at the base of the intake in several spots. Hit the base of the throttle body. Hit the brake booster hose. Hit the PCV hoses. Hit the fuel reg hoses, hit every hose plugged directly to the intake. Any vacuum leak will make the engine bog or almost die because of the sudden unmeasured volatile such as brake clean. Its ok. Let it bog and sputter. Shoot some brake clean on it again to confirm your findings.

Then I'd pull the entire throttle body off. Open the blade and hold it open with a screw driver handle of something. Clean the bajeezus out of it with brake clean or throttle body cleaner and a toothbrush. Your idle motor is the largest doodad on the side of throttle body. Pop it off, spray, scrub with toothbrush. Let all the chemicals dry. Slap it all back together. Run it.

Thank you so much for that! You're awesome

Tomorrow I'll have some bonding time with my car and a can of brake clean

Almost forgot. Theres a fat vacuum line just behind the PS pump/Alt area. Squirt that one in a couple different spots or just wiggle it and make sure its not pinched or cracked and its in place correctly.

So today it wasn't acting up at all. I did some squirting around, but nothing. Grrr
