Alright guys, imPretty sure my motor is gonna be toast within a month with bad rings. Im thinking about a ej25 swap. Can i run a 2.2 ecu with the 2.5 and will my tranny be good for the swap?

Any other input is welcome too.

Hope this Is in the right category.

Tranny will be fine, what you need to do is keep the intake mani and everything attached to it (throttle body etc) and bolt that to the 2.5.

Correct me if I'm wrong someone but I think that's how it goes..

Not sure of what phase 2.5 you need and what that would come out of however. Others will chime in there.

A 99 will have the phase 2 2.2. I want to say that you can get a SOHC ej25 out of a 2001 RS to work, other then that I think its ej25d.

This is correct. 99 will be a phase2 2.2, so get any SOHC 2.5. Then as ray said, take the 2.2 intake manifold, all the associated parts (MAF, etc) and bolt it to the 2.5. Basically just swap the long block. Also, you'll need a dual port exhaust header.

So any 2.5 from forester 99-05,legacy 00-04 and impreza 99-05 will work I would stay away from the 06+ 2.5 cause of the vct you will loose power being that you can't hook it up I would also steer clear of the 03-04 legacy 2.5 cause it has a single port head and are lacking in power also

Don't you also have swap your cam and crank gear onto the new motor too? I thought I read something about that on ultimatesubaru.org

i have a running sohc 2.5 for sale ready to drop in

I did that swap in my impreza. It went like hell... Above 4k. Had a nasty dead spot. Idk why. Never cared enough to fix it.

He may or may not have to, depending on what the donor comes out of. Manual vs automatic came with different style crank/cam relucor lobes in some years. If the little teeth for the crank pickup look the same on your new engine as the old one, you're fine. If they don't swap the crank and driver side cam gear. You should pull them to do seals anyway, so it's not a big deal.
