Paint Job

Ill get pics uploaded here soon, I found a 2001 with MINT blue body panels, so I took everything that was not welded on. I'm in the process of swapping everything over and then repainting what's left.

I have all the tools, air compressor, paint gun, plenty of varying grades of buffing sandpaper and time. I'm expecting to use 2 or 3 cans worth of the paint itself, plus primer and a coating. (only painting the rear quarter panels, and the roof does not need to be perfect because its not seen easily. I figured I would simply sand the panels as best I can, lay down a good coat of primer, 2 coats of paint, and a coating. it may not be professional, but so long as it matches closely.

Who's painted their own car before, how did it come out, and what mistakes did you make that can be easily avoided? any information would be great, otherwise I gotta track down someone that will trade me these blue panels for that fugly green forester color.

I have a spare panel that's pretty badly dented and scratched up I'm going to practice on first before I break out all the big tools so I can get used to what I'm getting myself into.
