PC question

I have an external hard drive with a few thousand songs and comedy audio bits on it. When I plug it in to the PC with the usb it opens in Windows Media Player. However, when scrolling down thru the songs so I can burn myself a cd for the week Windows Media stops the scroll and snaps back to the begining of the list. So I can only see the first 100 or so songs before it snaps back to the begining of the list making impossible to create a burn list or even click a song to listen to half way down or 3/4th the way down the list.

Does Windows Media have an option that stops this or prevent this?

I have opened it up and worked fine on other PCs with WinMedia, and opened it up with something other than Windows Media, but I can't remember the name of that media program, and can't seem to find it again on my PC.

What can I do?

The few times I have used window media player it pissed me off so bad I installed iTunes... So you could give that a try.

The current version of windows media player is 11. You may want to try upgrading if you have an older version.

If that doesn't work I'll try digging around for a different program. I just burn mp3 cds for my car so I don't have a freeware recommendation off the top of my head.

EDIT: quick search found this program which might do what you need if you cannot get media player working.

thanks guys. W. Media works, I just can't scroll down thru 30-40 songs before I get kicked back to the begining of the list again.

I have itunes. Gotta figure out how to open this drive with itunes

oh god please don't use itunes

or at least set the rip mode to mp3 first

I've never had that problem in windows media player, but you might want to try winamp.

He's trying to burn a CD, not listen.

semi-figured this out.

Windows is trying to refresh the list of songs from the K drive, say every 15 seconds or so, but only if Windows Media is playing something. And the refresh activitiy seems to coincide with the title and artist changes as Media displays the song and artist info while its playing. Media seems fine but Windows itself refreshes the list back to song number 1, which is frustrating because there are 3,000ish songs. But, I can get it to hold is the general area I'm scrolling thru on the list if I hold the scroll square at the side of the screen with my mouse. If I want to drag and drop songs to the burn list I have to do it quickly for fear of the list refreshing back to #1 and then get the mouse left clicked and holding back on the scroll bar.

I'm sorry, but this makes me laugh. And is the exact reason I don't use windows...

It is stupid, and there is probably a simple way to turn off the auto refreshing, but only the guy with 3 PhDs and 30 years of experience knows how to do it.

" oh that's an easy one..just right click here, drop that down select this and that and select the "off" feature. Presto!"

I haven't done the Media update yet, try that later.
