Piston Slap

Anyone else have a case of piston slap that was actually fixed for good? A little history here, 05 Baja N/A 5 speed, Charlies replaced 2 pistons and all rings at 24000 after I complained to SOA. Got the standard bull**** from the dealer about its normal if it goes away when warm, problem is it took about 30 minutes of running to warm up enough. When you use your car for lots of short trips in the winter the noise was driving me nuts. Hence the performance exhaust which helps distract from the slapping. The slap came back at 40000 and my original warrenty is out now (70000) I have an extended 5 yr/100,000 not sure who wrote it at the moment but I can locate it . So is this a resolvable issue or am I destined to live with it? BTW on warm 80 plus degree days its not bad, but this is Maine, sooo those are rare.

Any help/advice is appreciated

I would carry it back to a subaru dealership and complain it wasnt fixed right from the begining. Complain to SOA. You are a documented case.

Yes and no. Charlie's will work with you and against you. You have to phrase it correctly. ..

"its doing it again, the piston slap you repaired at 24k, is happening again. Don't you think I need a short block? I've called SOA and they suggested I bring it in. I'm pretty sure this isn't suppose to be like this. Can you help?"

Your lift kit and exhaust wont help much. They will think its being driven enthusiastically. A call to SOA def wont hurt, and will probably help a lot. A strong service history with said dealer will help a ton also. The extended warranty company will require receipts of service. In this case they will want to see oil changes every 3k-5k miles, and maybe one tune up. If its SAS Gold they are easy to deal with. If its an aftermarket company they will make you jump thru hoops but generally things get done eventually. Some after market companies make you pay first, then they re-imburse you.

It is a Subaru Gold plan with a $100 deductable, I have decent service records since the first rebuild. I think I'm missing four or five oil changes (did them myself, but I do have receipts for oil and filters), also, last week I was looking under the car while doing an oil change, and I noticed oil leaking down the side of the filter.

Looks like it may be coming from the head gasket. I wiped up real good and will monitor. Drivers side also looks moist.

Well then, what are you waiting for? You are covered x2.
Its a seven year /100,000 mile warranty, and I only have 70.000 miles. Also it's summer and I don't want to be without the car during the camping season. I can check my oil more frequently till fall. Plus, in the fall and with cooler temps the slapping is more pronounced and takes longer to go away (learned that from my first experience with Charlie's) it takes about 45 minutes to get to the dealership and by then the noise is less pronounced, if they keep it overnight with outside temps in the 30s they'll be no doubt about the slap.

Ah! Good plan. Piston slap is def more noticeable in colder temps. If Charlie's fails to hook you up this Fall come see us at Evergreen. You paid for SAS Gold and by cracky we'd love to have your business.

Thanks, I'll keep you in mind.
