Pot Hole Damage?

Dear Maine DOT.....FIX THE F$%(*#@ ROADS!

I hit a bad pot hole last night on Rt 100 in Cumberland at ~40MPH. Right side, both front and rear. I think the front end took the brunt of it. I have checked the tires/wheels visibly from the outside and they seem ok. TPMS has not come on so I am not losing any air pressure. Unfortunately I dont have the means to get my car on a lift and check the bumpstops or insides of the wheel, along with anything else that could have been damaged. I am also worried about unseen tire damage. Alignment is off only slightly. Any input?

I did call the Maine DOT as they handle the major roads. They have 24 hours to fix it, I asked what happens if they dont, and well I didnt get an answer.

Join the club! I've been doing estimates for days.

They have 24 hours to fix the road. If they don't they are liable for damages to your car. BUT, you'll need to find damage. Any vibrations at highway speed? Look for "eggs" bulging out of the sidewall, inner and outer. If it's pulling or the wheel is crooked, get a 4 wheel alignment ASAP. Sumpthin' might be bent.

I know the City of Auburn is usually real good about paying up.

What kind of backwards logic says that if they fix it within 24 hours they aren't liable for what happened because the problem was there in the first place?!?!?

this came out of village soup about two roads in Lincolnville

He also cautioned that little money, if any, is available in Augusta for complete rebuilding of the two roads, a job that would require full engineering and permitting from a variety of agencies. Cole said it currently costs approximately $800,000 per mile to rebuild a road, translating to $14-17 million to rebuild the 13 miles of Route 52 and three miles of Route 235.

"Our prices went up 35 percent in an 18-month period," Cole said. "We've had a decade's worth of inflation in 18 months."

My luck, they were fixed when I came home tonight. The car drives fine at highway speeds, well 80MPH anyway.

take a ride down winn rd and tell me what you think

I like all of the sections around the old port area that have been snow plowed so much that new sections of the old cobblestone roads are showing.

pot holes aren't so much and issue up here, it's the jumps, a/k/a frost heaves from hell. <5 miles stretch I can launch the cars no less than 6 times. DMS on the RS don't mind, the bilsteins on the tank, not so much. :-

So I called DOT legal department and the Maine DOT is not responsible for any damage due to pot holes.

No that's correct. It's just local muni's that'll pay you, so dont damage your car on state roads!!

That's cuz it's Main St in Cumberland... don't want to damage any Volvos up there. ;D

I damn near ripped the front end off the Forester on Broadway in SoPo by the ex-Captn' Newick's. Looks like they had to tap the city lines in the road for the new building and did a half assed job patching it up cuz the whole strip across the road has sunken quite a bit. Arghhh... Gotta swing way right next to the curb to avoid it.

it's eagle eye time on Maine roads. watch for potholes like you could drive into a money pit at any moment...becasue you shure as hell can!

one way to minimize pothole damage is by not braking into the hole. if you spot one and can't dodge it, brake hard and then release brake just before impact. this unloads suspension and frees up its whole travel to deal with the hole. hitting a hole while braking transfers much more stress to other important components of car as well...like the the g/f's bum if you know what I mean.

On my way up to Sugarloaf yesterday I kept passing "bump" signs. It was like using a garden hose to fight a forest fire.
